US commander warns of worse violence in Afghanistan when American troops leave – BBC News

Published

on

America’s longest-serving commander in Afghanistan says he expects Taliban violence to get worse, as US-led forces withdraw from the country over the coming months.

President Biden has said that all US troops will leave the country by September 2021, ending a deployment that’s lasted 20 years.

Recent violence has included a bomb attack outside a school in Kabul in which dozens of schoolgirls were killed.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Kabul by chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet.

Watching this again I could see the pain and grief more clearly not only in the Afghanistan people but in General Austin Scott Miller I've never really understood war but being a woman I know what hurt is. One thing I've always heard do your best and when you've done that that's all you can do . I believe strongly in God and General Austin Scott Miller did more than his best. You will always be remembered now and in history you are a fine, honest, caring man . I know God will always be with you. You have a big heart.

We should increase the military of every country so that even in any war, climate calamity , or anything else. We can utilize our military power.

it is not only a mistake but a huge blunder, USA has unfortunately committed having decided to leave Afghanistan like an orphan. i feel they could wait longer, train Afghanistan army better to fight against terrorists and then leave them. Now it is like finding oneself in the middle of nowhere. it is just shocking.

Your turn rest of the world. These were just kids who were brainwashed into fighting a war thinking they are making a better world. Does no one learn anything from history? Yall remember Vietnam right? Its this cute little country. Maybe the government will start spending our tax money on good things now…I highly doubt it though unfortunately

Scoot you knew what will happen when US troops leave Afghanistan and the Taliban is making chaos and kill the people, so not much different with Mujahidin collaborated with US to kick off the Soviet out of Afghanistan. The war hasn't finished yet after long period of time without success but fail. Should learn from during Vietnam war. And I hope there is no more war again and learn how to make a peace with your enemy even you don't like it. Shalom.

After US withdrew from Vietnam in August 73 the NVA captured Saigon in April 75 thats 20 months. After US withdrew from Iraq in December 2011 Isis deadly took Baghdad in Summer of 2014 thats aprox. 30 months. If Us leave Afghanistan in September 2021, Taliban will reach Kabul around the Summer/Fall 2023. My opinion

Homes set on fire in Belfast night of violence after knife attack | BBC News

Published

on

Houses, cars, and a bus were set on fire in Belfast last night in a night of violence that followed a knife attack on Monday.

The suspect, a 30-year-old Sudanese man who claimed asylum in the UK, is in court later.

In one area, hundreds of masked men carrying bottles and bricks set bins on fire and shouted “foreigners out”, our reporter says.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill says “groups of masked men” were “burning families out of their homes” – Chief Constable Jon Boutcher says the violence was a “huge act of self-harm by mindless idiots”.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described the chaos in Belfast on Tuesday night as “shocking and completely unacceptable”.

Myanmar’s civil war has claimed almost 100,000 lives.

In 2021 the country’s military seized power in a coup. After losing ground to rebel and ethnic groups, it’s making a renewed push, carrying out the forced-recruitment of tens of thousands of conscripts and employing new drone technology.

The United Nations’ human rights spokesman has condemned the military’s tactics which he’s called brutal and said that civilians are paying a terrible price.

BBC correspondent, Quentin Sommerville and Camera Journalist Darren Conway have spent time with rebel groups.

The furious dispute over what caused Air India flight 171 to crash | BBC News

Published

on

On 12 June 2025, a London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India, killing at least 260 people, including 241 passengers and crew on board.

Investigators have yet to publish their final findings into the cause of the crash.

A preliminary report into the incident from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau found both of the plane’s fuel switches moved to the “cut-off” position “immediately” after take-off, stopping fuel supply to the engine.

What is not clear however, is what actually caused the crash.
