Ecuador: State of emergency declared after notorious drug gang boss escapes from prison | BBC News

Published

on

A 60-day state of emergency is taking place in Ecuador after a convicted gang leader vanished from his prison cell.

Adolfo Macías Villamar, better known as “Fito”, is the leader of Los Choneros, a powerful gang which is thought to have been behind some of the deadly prison riots in recent months.

He was being held in the maximum security wing of a jail in Guayaquil.

The emergency measures include the suspension of the right of assembly and a nightly curfew.

Because of what's happening in Ecuador, it is time to ask the U.S. for an intervention just like what they did in Chile over the year 73'. Besides, here in Chile we're in a similar scenario, then at some point the president will be forced to declare "state of emergency" like the president of Ecuador did it. Meanwhile, let's pray for Ecuador's people in order to stop all of this.

What is happening in Ecuador is very unfortunate, there are many innocent people who have died because of criminals, I hope that the President can solve this problem soon and that there are no more deaths. Ecuador used to be a very calm country but due to the bad decisions of the politicians they had to go through this situation

How could this be an embarrassment for a president who took office just 2 months ago? She doesn't even know the correct names. I'm Polish who lives in Ecuador for 10 years now, this situation has been building up for since the pandemic and this president is a non-politic who is a long awaited hope for some action. After a big crackdown on corruption among high officials, he now is trying to solve this problem crime problem. What I think they should do is to strengthen the border with Colombia to starve those gangs.

It's really a shame in the modern world we don't have a simple structure of principles that all countries must follow internationally to ensure these kind of problems aren't given a chance to develop the oversight should be responsibility of all countries to make sure we all together have a better world to live in regardless of what system you have we need global core principles that everyone can agree to and be accountable for. Real support is needed and internationally audited with actual powers to remove those who are breaking the basic core principles of established and developing nations.
