Why did Ron DeSantis quit US presidential race? – BBC News
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Donald Trump.
He quit ahead of the Republican primary election in New Hampshire, where he was polling in the single digits.
DeSantis was once considered a strong contender for the party’s nomination – but on Sunday he said he did not “have a clear path to victory”.
Nikki Haley is Trump’s last remaining challenger.

A Russian drone hit an apartment block in Romania causing a fire and wounding two people, officials say.
The incident happened on Friday in the town of Galati – close to Romania’s eastern border with Ukraine and Moldova.
Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said “Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all”, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s “war of aggression had crossed yet another line”.
Russian drones have strayed across Romania’s border a number of times during the four-year war with Ukraine, but it is the first time citizens from the Nato country have been hurt. Russia has yet to comment on the incident.

DeSantis was the only candidate to have consistently delivered. Trump was effective (check the stats on the US economy in 2019 if you're ignorant of it) but failed to build the wall and made some horrible appointments. Elevating Fauci and giving him a medal was risible. If DeSantis plays his cards right he'll be POTUS in 2028 and whatver happens he's probably the best governor in the country. Haley is horrible. A classic RINO who is also a war monger in the back pocket of weapons manufacturers. This 'journalist' is wrong – hey, it's the BBC – Haley will get some DeSantis votes and they won't all go to Trump. She also failed to mention (of course she did) that New Hampshire results come with a hefty pinch of salt. Democrats and Independents can vote.

DeSantis is probably looking at 2028 when he won't be going up against an incumbent advantage and hopefully the GOP will have gotten over the Trumpism hangover and can rebuild a centrist party that will be competitive with democrats.
