Mysterious plants and fungi named new to science | BBC News
From an underground “forest” to spectacular orchids, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, discovered 74 new plants and 15 fungi last year.
Many of the mysterious species were found in unlikely places, such as on the top of a volcano or clinging to Antarctic rocks.
The new finds need immediate protection and at least one will probably already have been lost, scientists said.

Hawk Fire wildfire in Nevada expected to rage for another two days, say officials | BBC News
US fire crews have reported progress in their efforts to tackle a large wildfire menacing the city of Reno, Nevada – saying the blaze is about a quarter contained.
The Hawk Fire, which began on Saturday, had spread over 15,000 acres by Monday, firefighters said.
Evacuation orders remain in place for 23,000 people, though other residents have now been allowed to return to their homes. Tens of thousands of other residents have been told to be ready to leave at any moment.
Officials are concerned that gusts of wind could drive the flames towards more homes. Unfavourable weather conditions are forecast for the next two days, meaning the fire could continue to burn during that timeframe.

China has two million robots already working in factories, and is investing heavily in the hopes that one day they could bridge gaps in an already sluggish economy. What can these robots do? China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

The newly discovered palm they refer to is Pinanga Subterranea I believe. Very fascinating.
Pinanga subterranea (Arecaceae), a species new to science from Borneo, is the first member of the palm family recorded to flower and fruit almost exclusively below ground.

he says some of them are "not totally new" as if to say the others are 'recently evolved' and that's just not how evolution works.
every single animal and plant discovery has been around this whole time but they just haven't been catalogued yet. they weren't discovered sooner because of their location and/or small number.
phenotypes don't just change over night. new plants don't just appear. you'd think this guy would understand that.

Just few days in Amazons AWT77K is clearly setting up the new milestone!
