Oh, dear. A lemon/ginger cake with candied Triffids on top of it. I'll pass.

There were many ways to make a cake. Thank you for the information.

So, with your pancakes recipe you weighed your eggs and used that as basis for your ratios, to avoid inconsistencies due to eggs sizes. Is that something you would recommend here too?

I could follow Ben’s recipe to the gram and I still won’t have any success with what I’ve baked 😂😂 people always say baking is a science and I’ve followed different recipes, I’ve tried different methods and I’ve tried different baked goods and have never had any success, some people are meant to bake and I’m not one of them 😂😂

Another thing you can do instead of a syrup for the drizzle cake is pour your favorite flavour of jello over the top while its still hot and it will soak into all the holes the same way a syrup will.

Has anyone tried this with American self-rising flour? I assume they are very similar, I use White Lilly flour to make my Southern Buttermilk Biscuits.

This is definitely going to my baking bookmark 💖

Hi Ben , how many fairy cakes will 2 eggs (100g of the rest ) make?

  10. @JagMods

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

I've made this cake 3 times and each time it was a disaster. first and last go the cake fell. 🙁 The Second time I used salted butter and I activated the gluten – a complete disaster. I do love the Like a chef series 🙂

Hey Ebbers? Most of us use the spoon side of a spoon when adding a 'Teaspoon" of something… just saying.

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

This is probably the first cooking show/recipe channel I've seen that PROMOTES the use of self rising flour. I never used all purpose until I was an adult and learned to make my own gravies. I accidentally bought the wrong thing once. Where I'm from in the US, self rising flour is pretty common. It's nice that you're explaining it for people who don't know the difference.

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Speaking of the lemon drizzle cake that doesn’t need to be lemon, instead of lemon syrup you can use tea! Earl Grey or Lady Grey are nice because you get the hint of lemon or orange but a strong English breakfast tea with some sugar to make a syrup is amazing

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

quick question… what size are the eggs for the ratio to work? small and large are very different so surely it would destroy the ratio?

  15. @jennifernicholson4861

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Catching up on the old series! I love this "Like a Chef" series! I learn so much! I just wish you would bring back getting the recipes on Youtube or add a series in the Cookbook app of the "Like a Chef" series. This series helps me become a better cook and baker.

How would you change the ratio to make it a chocolate cake?

  18. @azalia1225

Right hang on a sec. Ben was cooking at 8??! I wasn't allowed to do anything in the kitchen until I was 16.

So my butterfly cakes looked nothing like Ebbbers! But the method was there! Cheers team

  24. @rebel4466

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Self raising flour. Maybe it's just because you can't buy it here, but is it really important to have a baking powder and flour mix sold seperately? Can't be too hard to mix together yourself lol

  25. @AbsolutePernilla

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Could you do a cake experiment and substitute the regular sugar for different types of sugar? Do different types of sugar mean different ratios/amounts of it?

  26. @JYNaRa2fly

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

This is a very dangerous recipe for someone who makes their own dessert whenever they crave anything.. me.. it's dangerous for me 😂 imma get fat real quick n easy

  27. @yannlee7821

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

I feel like a dumb ass. I wanted to try out this recipe; however, it didn't work. It wasn't baking at all and the cake is still wet….that is when I realize I live in US and they live in UK. So I was baking the cake at basically 80 C.

  28. @quads2483

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

could you guys do 3 ingredient cakes as a battle or as a chef

  29. @AverageAJ94

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

To make these vegan use non dairy butter and use flaxseed mix instead of eggs!

1tbsp ground flaxseed combined with 2.5tbsp water

  30. @sammarie3808

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

I made my mother's wedding cake with this recipe. Thanks for the steal guys!

  31. @RaymondArias

7:14. Oh, my question just got answered. =D

  32. @RaymondArias

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Is this the same ratio Ben used for Barry's wedding cake?

  33. @user-uq1xi7mz9t

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Umm, does this ratio work for cakes like banana cake too? 🥺

  34. @DydydyA

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

I've been watching for years and years and years, through all thr growth and change that this channel has gone through, but Ben videos will still always be my favorite videos.

  35. @mariam-m

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

They don't sell ginger extract here .. can I substitute it with ginger juice?

  36. @jenat82

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Yeah.. we don't have self-raising flour here- I lived in England for 6 years and what a weird thing. Having to have 3 types of wheat flour compared to just two (high protein and cake flour/tickner). I have baking powder and baking soda, why would I want flour with it included? I love you England but that is just dumb. 🙂

  37. @shraddhapanda2868

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Loved it! First cake bake aged 8 🤦🏻‍♀️ you were meant to be a chef

  38. @jjo5375

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Looks really awesome, Ben. Can't wait to try it! (My favorite flavoring is: Anise). Your formula is a foundation for so many flavor options. Thanks! : )

  39. @vaporeonqueen

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Do you have to alter the ratio if adding cocoa powder?

  40. @Boss_Garden_Care

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

I'm sounding so dumb here. So is Ben doing 3 eggs and 150grams of each of the other items for the first cakes? I seen him add 3 eggs in total but no more butter, sugar ect

  41. @jessicaeurice3335

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Ben said easy to remember ratio. I said pound cake. Is this a pound cake? I've never made one but I do know it's equal parts flour, fat, sugar.

  42. @AustynSN

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

So basically a pound cake with leavening added.
(Though there is a reason why pound cake was used in the episode of Good Eats in which Alton demonstrated how much the same recipe can change based upon the technique used.)

  43. @shaunaXX

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

….was this the recipe you used for Barry’s wedding cake?? Was that the wedding cake you were talking about??

  44. @zomerkoninkjes

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Me, watching this video a week later while I wait for my eggs to warm up to room temperature

  45. @m005kennedy

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

    Caster sugar?

  46. @mellissapote8217

    January 18, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Bought some hibiscus syrup a while ago and didn't know what to do with it…now I do. Thanks guys!
