Mass protests and arrests across US over George Floyd death – BBC News
Protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis have spread to at least 30 US cities.
The black American man died after being pinned to the ground by a white police officer, who kept his knee on the suspect’s throat for more than eight minutes. George Floyd is the latest in a string of black Americans to die while being arrested or in police custody.
There’s been violence, looting and arson in some cities and several have imposed curfews. President Trump’s national security adviser has denied there is institutional racism in the US police, saying that most officers were heroes.
But a lawyer for George Floyd’s family accused the police officer who’s been charged with his killing of “premeditated murder.”
Protests in support of George Floyd have also taken place in other cities around the world including London and Berlin.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Barbara Plett Usher in Minneapolis and from North America Editor Jon Sopel.

Americans react to President Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo XIV | BBC News
Americans are reacting to President Donald Trump’s escalating feud with Pope Leo XIV and the backlash surrounding an AI-generated image depicting the president as a Jesus-like figure, which has since been deleted.
On Monday, Trump posted a lengthy Truth Social message attacking the pontiff, who has been a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operations in Iran.
He criticised the Pope, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”.
The Pope said on Monday that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration or “speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do”.
