Covid: UK fighting patent-free Covid vaccine proposals – BBC Newsnight
#Newsnight has been leaked a World Health Organization (WHO) document revealing high income countries, including the UK, are fighting proposals designed to help developing countries manufacture their own #Covid19 vaccines. subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog
There are only global solutions to a global pandemic. Everyone says it – we hear rhetoric about generosity to the world’s poorest over supplies of key medicines. But do we actually mean it?
Now Newsnight has obtained a leaked draft of WHO discussions that show the efforts of some rich countries, including the UK, to block proposals that would help developing countries – many with no access to current Covid vaccine supplies – to increase their manufacturing capability.
The argument is that drugmakers need to keep control of their intellectual property to provide the incentive to invent vaccines in the first place.
A government spokesperson said:
“A global pandemic requires a global solution and the UK is leading from the front, driving forward efforts to ensure equitable access around the world to COVID vaccines and treatments.
“As one of the largest donors to COVAX, our funding is going to help to distribute one billion doses of coronavirus vaccines to developing countries this year alone.”
Health Correspondent Deb Cohen reports.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News
Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.
Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.
At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.
So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?
AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.

Canada is a good example because until quite recently the federal government both funded vaccine research and had the public infrastructure. That was largely 'thanks' to SARS. That was dismantled under the conservative government, and should have been rebuilt, but wasn't.
The issue is not even patent free. Because within a MONTH of pfizer making its original announcement, TWO Texas non profits said they had patent free vaccines. If people forget, Canada, like most countries, then threw money at Pfizer and Moderna to 'pre buy' vaccines before they were even known to work. I've only seen a couple of reports but there was a whistlelblower from Pfizer who said that the company had some pretty specious operations during the testing, certainly no better than any non profit or public sector operation would have.
So countries COULD have put that money into partnering with the two non profits, or with Cuba or China or numerous countries developing their own.
The problem here is 'disaster capitalism' because as you see here, the 'corporate model' has to be protected by any means. Certainly in canada but in other western countries privatization has increased all during covid. Public services are being gutted because of course health and education are big money, about the ONLY big money left. So governments have to outrightly fight that natural impetus that people have- that PROFIT shouldin't over ride peoples lives. In our current economy, its almost a given, if you have no money, you SHOULD simply go away or die but sure as hell government services shouldn't favour PEOPLE, they should favour markets and corporations. That used to be our imperial practice in other countries, now as Chris Hedges has said, that has now extended to our own societies, and it ain't pretty.

Why aren't those that created and own the patent for the virus held accountable for this worldwide disaster? Making something like this on purpose is mind blowing in the first instance! Followed by god knows whats really in this vaccine. These so called experts are merely puppets for corporates and governments to convince the misinformed public so they can get richer.

CCP spreads the virus, the CCP backed WHO wants IP of vaccines waiver, so CCP can make all vaccines needed for world and make tons of money? We have a brain damaged administration in American.
@chunglee7531
January 15, 2024 at 9:59 am
Since Merkel opposites this waiver idea for Pfizer, it is “stupid” for American President to do it for Novavax or any other American firms like MRNA and J&J, that spent our tax payers’ money for RD. I think many Democrats are just plain dumb, because no country will appreciate this gesture of kindness. It would be smarter to make sale to all countries at the same price we paid , then donate profits from Taxes to only friendly countries to American. In the later case, people can feel the kinder ness of Americans.

Please remove patent rights on Covid-19 Vaccines to save our earth by saving humans as soon as possible.
Otherwise another non curable disease will born with death of lots of people in poor and developing countries as they have already started dying on road sides which will be not curable and kill entire population of humans on earth.
Please don't see Trade Opportunity and earn money through Covid-19 Vaccine as What you will do with money when there will be no humans left.

See in Bloomberg: "Homegrown Indian Covid Vaccine Already in Use Shows 78% Efficacy." The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution reads as follows: “Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." Thus, the transfer of vaccine technology that is being demanded is of the new mRNA technology.
Simplify this and assume what the Moderna, two-shot vaccine would be worth if it were the only vaccine to thereby estimate the value of all of the vaccines: if you think about it, since the world's entire population will have to be vaccinated, even if each vaccine were sold for just $20 per shot, because most would need to be re-vaccinated with two or three more shots after the initial two vaccine shots due to the variants and due to immunity loss, with a world population of 7.9 billion the expected base value to Moderna of these vaccines would be worth in total the following: 7.9 billion times $20 times 4 shots or $632 BILLION.
Additionally, the mRNA technology that would also have to be transferred to enable other countries to make the mRNA Covid 19 vaccines might later be able to cure cancer, etc. so that technology would probably be worth multiples of that amount. The US government would have to pay Moderna and the other vaccine manufacturers trillions of dollars in “just compensation” for the vaccines if it took the technology to make them, etc., away from them. Could the US just give away TRILLIONS of dollars to other countries?
Also, any new mRNA vaccines would not arrive for nearly a year, because if the mRNA technology were transferred to the poorer nations with pharmaceutical facilities requesting such transfer, namely China and India, it would take at least that long for their facilities to acquire the equipment, train the technicians, build the processing plants, etc., to create safe vaccines then to test them to verify that they really were safe and then to test that they were effective. The CCP's Sinovac vaccine has a world-wide reputation as dangerous garbage because these latter steps were not taken.
India already is producing good Covid 19 vaccines but just not enough of them yet and has the technology and equipment set up to do so, so those existing, homegrown vaccines should just be produced in more and more factories instead of transferring to them a totally new technology, which would only take up the places of production and delay production that they could now otherwise use to produce their known, effective, existing vaccines. Thus, the claims of the CCP and others to get this technology gifted to them for free by using the pandemic panic are shown to be specious.
I suspect that what we are seeing here is a sneaky effort by the pharmaceutical manufacturers of other countries like China to obtain a free transfer to them of the West's mRNA technology that was obtained at the cost of billions and billions of dollars in investment for over twenty years for free. As of now, the fastest way to make vaccines that will arrive within the next few months is to make them in the existing Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, Indian, (etc.) plants and scale those up. That is already occurring.

UK and US haven't sent even just one vial of vaccine. IP issue have made them hoarders and they expect if they transfer technology to countries like India or China, such countries must export 40% of the vaccine produced to other nations.

This guy is lying African countries got vaccine after 83 days after first shot was given in UK. Daily Show mentioned.
@nouhelhassar2057
January 15, 2024 at 9:59 am
What about the fact that the virus is still circulating among a huge mass of people, as in India right now for example, which increases the chances of new strains emerging, and perhaps your fully vaccinated population will need a totally different vaccine, so further drastic measures will be required for some time until a suitable vaccine is developed again?
Or possibly another story lies here that has yet to be told.
