Climate deal “falls short” as China and India block end to coal power – BBC News
World leaders and environmental experts have welcomed a UN climate deal that for the first time targets fossil fuel as the key driver of global warming. However many expressed disappointment with the agreement and warned that the world was still on course for disastrous warming.
The summit reached deadlock over coal power after India and China blocked a call for it to be completely phased out. Instead the summit could only agree that it would be “phased down”.
The UK, which hosted the summit, hailed the deal as a “game-changing agreement”. But critics warned that it does not deliver the key summit goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C by the end of the century.
The summit did agree to provide money for poorer countries to help them adapt to climate change, as well as curbs to methane emissions and deforestation.

Social media giant Meta has agreed to a $18bn (£13.3bn) settlement with US states and territories to resolve claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children.
A California judge approved the settlement, which Meta must pay to 48 states, plus the District of Columbia and three US territories, marking the company’s largest payment over child safety litigation to date.
Meta will also implement a host of changes aimed at better protecting kids online, which the states had demanded, including default daily time limits and night-time blocks.
Meta has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement and said on Wednesday that the payment it agreed to “will be distributed in annual instalments over a 10-year period”.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told the BBC that PC Andrew Harper’s killers will remain behind bars as he announces changes to the early release scheme aimed at easing prison overcrowding.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Breakfast, Burnham said anyone convicted of manslaughter will be excluded from changes brought in under the Sentencing Act, which would have made the killers eligible for early release.
Burnham said extra prison spaces would be created by deporting “hundreds” of foreign prisoners and releasing some inmates serving indefinite sentences.

Twenty-seven people have been killed and almost 400 evacuated after a Russian strike hit a warehouse near Kyiv, triggering a fire and a series of explosions.
Regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said a further 42 people, including four children, were injured after the Russian drone strike in the Bucha district.
An investigation has been launched into whether ammunition was being stored at the site, where search and rescue operations were ongoing early on Saturday.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement that its forces had targeted “an ammunition depot” in the Kyiv region village of Myla, which stores “components and launch boosters for FP-1/FP-2 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles”.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the strike, saying that more than 300 emergency respondents had been deployed to the strike area.

Typical western media propaganda. They conveniently left out the fact that over the last century they were allowed to pollute uninterrupted to build up their economies. Now that someone else wants to do the same, they go on a smear campaign and misinformation mission.
Also, carbon footprint per capita makes each European looks pretty horrible.

As usual western biased coverage. Look at India's per capita consumption compared to western world. I result will shock you. India pledged to become zero carbon emittors in the near future. But western elites not even try to go green. By the way recently Brits announced that they're opening their coal mines for energy. I want to say well done my Brits. Your the inspiration for who wanna pollute the world further more.

China apparently has emitted more CO2 in the last 8 years than Britain has in the entire time since the Industrial Revolution. Without support and measures taken by China and India, both desperately overpopulated, with almost 3 billion people between them, the population of the entire planet only 77 years ago when World War 2 ended – all measures taken to cut or limit emissions will be totally useless, and there should be no doubt whatsoever in people’s minds about that.
The only way in fact to stop emissions was not to have an industrial revolution in the first place.
But of course people did not know about climate problems then. And a world without an industrial revolution would still have desperate problems, just different from the ones we have now.

All this was and is entirely predictable. We rant and rave about the climate and have done so for years without anything really being done about it. The fact is civilization can not survive without the use of fossil fuels but also cannot survive if we continue to use them indefinitely.
And also, all these worries about the climate will mean nothing if Putin in Russia launches a nuclear war, and wipes civilization out in the process,
At the moment you cannot reduce emissions without also drastically reducing standards of living, to a lifestyle back to the Middle Ages, medieval or even earlier, which whatever else they may say otherwise, people in the developed world will not accept and people in China, India and other places are not prepared to forgo increases in living standards.
Frankly, the world is beset by so many desperate problems which are now too far gone and too big to fix. The climate is one – it really is a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, although the door has not even been shut yet – wars, like the one in the Ukraine caused by Man’s aggressive nature and population, which is now almost 8 billion, up from 3 and a half billion when I was born 60 years ago. And all this is not to mention, depletion of finite resources which things like recycling can only slow it down and not stop, and civilization will certainly end when that happens, even if by a miracle these other problems could be resolved.
All this climate talk is a classic case of “Never in the field of human history has there been so much talk and conferences about a problem going on for so long for so little, if any result”.
And how much emissions have this Egypt conference and others like it have caused? And how much emissions do the media cause reporting on this and any other issue? How much CO2 did this report emit, for instance? I am pretty certain it is not nothing.

Yeah right, India and China, the two countries who are amongst the topmost nations producing the most green energy will be answerable to the effected countries, while Europe and US, which contributed to the largest amount of historical emmisions are the ones who decide who will be answerable to whom. Hypocrisy at its best.

Give India low interest loans so that India can make it nuclear reactors which according to IAEA is some of the safest reactors in the world. The waste can be brought to normal levels in about three hundred years which is not a long time.
