What’s happening to puffin numbers off Britain’s coast? – BBC News
Puffins living on the Farne Islands off Britain’s coast have drawn concern that their numbers are declining due to bad weather and food shortages.
Numbers have fallen by 15% in recent years, and there is concern climate change may have affected the population of sand eels, which are puffins’ primary source of food.
Now, the annual puffin census has resumed off the Northumberland coast after it was suspended during the pandemic.
National Trust rangers have to check hundreds of burrows – their underground nests – for signs of occupation to understand how the birds are faring.

The former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Jeffrey Donaldson, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of child sex offences, including rape.
Donaldson was convicted in June of 18 offences, which he committed against two women when they were children, between 1985 and 2008.
Reading victim statements, the sentencing judge said one woman grew up feeling ashamed, while the other said: “every day I pray God will let me die”.

Several people have been killed or injured as a result of a large fire near a Canadian military base in Alberta, the nation’s defence minister has said.
David McGuinty did not confirm the cause or the number of casualties, describing the situation as “very, very active and delicate”. The Canadian military and local authorities were managing the fire, he said.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where the fire broke out, is one of the country’s busiest military training bases.
