Coronavirus India: Death and despair as migrant workers flee cities – BBC News
India’s strict lockdown to halt the spread of coronavirus meant that most factories and businesses shut down, rendering millions jobless.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to businesses to keep paying their workers, including daily-wage labourers.
But that didn’t happen, and most of the workers were left with little money and food.
With no prospect of income, they took long journeys to go back to their villages. Some managed to get transport, but those who couldn’t, walked hundreds of miles.
And some of them never made it home as they died because of exhaustion or in accidents.

Ex-gang boss Duane “Keffe D” Davis sentenced for orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s murder | BBC News
Former gang boss Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for orchestrating the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in a drive-by shooting in 1996.
The key evidence in the case were Davis’ own words, in which he repeatedly and publicly acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from where the deadly shots were fired.
A jury found him guilty in September of one count of murder with a deadly weapon. Davis has said he will appeal the verdict.
His conviction was the first in a cold case that has intrigued hip-hop fans for nearly 30 years.

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has had surgery to remove a lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican has said in a medical bulletin.
The 71-year-old underwent a 90 minute operation on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and was subsequently diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
The lump was first detected during what the Vatican has described as “routine checks”.
Earlier, large crowds gathered outside the hospital to greet the Pope, with some waiting for several hours. They cheered greetings and well wishes as he passed, while he waved and smiled back through the lowered back window of his car.
He was then met by staff on the hospital steps. “I’m sorry,” one of them commiserated, to which the Pope gave a smile and a shrug. “We’re here for you,” he was assured.
In its statement, the Vatican said the whole lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung was removed “to ensure the procedure was radical”.
A Vatican source told Agence France-Presse news agency that further tests are being carried out to see if there was any sign the cancer had spread.
Leo XIV announced news of his operation to the world on Sunday, without at that time confirming that he was suffering from cancer. Speaking from the balcony in St Peter’s Square after delivering the traditional Angelus blessing, he said the nodule, or growth, on his lung was “contained” and had been found “at a very early stage”, but that doctors had advised him to have it removed.
Nodules are quite common and not necessarily cancerous, but after it was examined the medical team confirmed it was pulmonary adenocarcinoma, “as suspected by pre-operative tests”, the Vatican said. It said that the pontiff, who is generally thought to be fit, had no symptoms of infection or illness.

In a democracy people themselves responsible for their miseries. Most of these migrant workers belong from the state like UP, Bihar and west Bengal where they elect government on the basis of caste. When election comes then they vote for people like Lalu who is one of the most corrupt politician on the Earth but when they have to find a job then they don't ask Lalu for jobs rather then they move towards other states for finding jobs.

What is the value of democracy to poor people who could not make a decent living? Does freedom of speech in democracy mean anything when you cannot even feed yourself?

I´ ve been in India 5 times ( one and a half year in the whole) and I´m far away from " I know India" but what I know bout Indian people is absolutely positive.
They don´t complain to much, they DO something as diligent people do.
If there is no job, ok I sell tea at the corner, mend shoes, cut grass for cows and, and and.
With all their problems those people stay friendly and helpful.
Corona cuts off everyting and they face the same problem as we have in our western countries:
The politicians in power don´t know what country they are ruling.
They sit in their palace and do not know their own people. They know about power and economic growth.
We ALL should look for other governments. In India and the European States as well!
