WW1: The crucial battle for Togo – BBC News

It has been 100 years since the outbreak of World War One – and most people tend to think of the conflict’s European battlefields.
But one of the first and crucial battles took place in Africa when allied forces invaded the German colony of Togoland in August 1914.
The BBC’s Akwasi Sarpong travelled to Togo to uncover one of the lesser known stories of the war and its impact on the West African nation.

Seven people have died after a passenger boat capsized near northern Cyprus.
Search and rescue operations are under way to find 23 people missing, said Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
He says 267 people were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 237 have been rescued.
The boat left from the northern Cypriot port of Kyrenia at 11:58 local time (09:58 BST) and officials said it capsized around four nautical miles into its journey to Turkey.

Ukraine’s progress against Russian forces in its southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia has been far more limited than its successes in the north-east.
Both sides come under regular fire as they rely heavily on artillery to push forward.
The crackdown on people who do not support Russian rule in occupied areas is rising, with soldiers going door-to-door to check on who lives in each house and whether they could be drafted into fighting for Russia.

The government has said it will exercise “extreme caution” over lifting the lockdown. Ministers stress it will be a gradual process, not a single leap to freedom. It comes as the Prime Minister prepares to address the nation, to set out the next phase in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile major airlines have called for clarity after being told that the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK, from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland.
The transport secretary Grant Shapps has called on people to walk and cycle to work, once the lockdown restrictions are eased in England. He said it was a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform the way people get around.
Senior clerics are urging the government to act cautiously before allowing places of worship to reopen. All churches, mosques, synagogues and temples closed their doors almost two months ago.

LES SERIES APPRENDRE LE MINA. Le mina de Lomé qui est un mélange de l’éwé, gain, français, anglais, allemand et le portugais, n’est pas reconnue comme une langue officielle du Togo (même si c’est elle qu’on parle sur tout le territoire et au dela). A cause du Ghana, l’éwé est bien documente et peut être appris jusqu’à l’université au Ghana car le nombre de personne qui parle l’éwé au Ghana est grand. Nous devons faire de même puisque le mina de Lomé est la langue la plus parlée au Togo ; alors tous, aidez ma lutte et aidez à faire de ce mina notre langue officielle. Merci

The people of Togo land would be proud of the American hero that bears its name! Togo was an awesome Siberian husky that braved the barren tundra at 60 below in 50 mph wind to save the children of nome from a diphtheria epidemic….he was an underdog too….if you want to see him today he is at the Iditarod trail museum in willow Alaska….even now if you look into his glass eyes with an open mind you can see the heart of a survivor!
