UN rights chief: Israel’s Gaza response ‘wholly disproportionate’ – BBC News

Published

on

The UN human rights chief says Israel used “wholly disproportionate” force against Palestinian border protests which have left over 100 people dead. Israel’s Ambassador Aviva Raz Shechter rejected the blame, saying Israel had done everything possible to avoid harming civilians.

UN rights chief Zeid Raad Al Hussein told a meeting in Geneva that Gazans were effectively “caged in a toxic slum” and Gaza’s occupation by Israel had to end.
Israel’s ambassador said Gaza’s militant Islamist rulers had deliberately put people in harm’s way.
The UN meeting is considering calling for an independent investigation.
Some 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Monday on the seventh consecutive week of border protests, largely orchestrated by Hamas, which politically controls the Gaza Strip.
It was the deadliest day in Gaza since a 2014 war between Israel and militants there.

The idea of needing the response to be proportionate is pure rubbish. If the Gaza terrorists want to live, then they must stop shooting rockets at Israel. I believe the response should be much stronger. Israel tries in every way to avoid civilian casualties, but Hamas is murdering Gazan children by shooting the rockets from schools and hospitals. A proportionate response would be for Israel to launch rockets into Gaza in an effort to kill innocent civilians like Hamas does against Israel. Far more Palestinians would die in that event.

At least they are talking against the oppression. I respect the words spoken. Better than our leaders who are quite and doing nothing

Thank you Mr. Ivan Šimonović. Very professional and hopefully representing international public opinion. I hope we can see justice for the people of Gaza and Palestine.

I bet this guy isn't very popular on the world stage.. unless it's going to be a white wash and a deliberate attempt to shift blame in the direction of the Palestinine people.. which would destroy an future attempts and undermine any future investigations that spin off of this investigation.. the fact that it made it before the UN ..has me suspicious

I am pretty sure they are only talking about one side of the story.
The guy did state that they were throwing Molotov cocktails at the border along.
Also the more deaths on one side is mainly due to Israeli having better weapons to defend themselves with.
I do think they need to try a diffrent method in dealing with children, but I do also think the Palestinian side should keep children away from a border that has hostility from both sides

Disproportionate use of violence? this is a nice way to say what Israel did is a crime against humanity! You are the reason for what the Palestinians have been a slaughter for seven decades! You are a disgrace, you don't fulfil your duty as a protector of peace and defenceless civilians United Nations you are just another bureaucratic institution created just to subvert those who oppose the imperialist agenda of the great powers. You will never impose sanctions against Israel for its criminal behaviour against the Palestinians, you will never hold Israel accountable for such cruel and inhumane policies!! YOU JUST TALK! while the Palestinians are slaughter day after day, year after year and decade after decade! shame on you!

I pray with every fibre of my being that rock bottom has been reached in terms of the violence and that upwards is the way the region will go.The UN must put its words into action. For its own credibility, for the sake of those trapped in the quagmire and for all of us waiting and watching for this scourge to be stopped so that justice can be done.

  21. @kidoniran1576

    January 7, 2024 at 8:43 am

"Better bad press than a good eulogy" The Chief forgets that Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza and forcibly removed all settlers in hopes of a first step for peace with the Palestinians. Instead, Hamas took over Gaza and created a terrorist stronghold festering on Israel's southern boarder. No country in the world would put up with that.
Palestinians have been waging the richest revolution in history. With Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq as past sponsors… To Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, and Iran the new sponsors. They could have built Gaza into Dubai with all the money they blew trying to kill Israelis. They could have had their state years ago including East Jerusalem. Palestinian leadership simply hate Israel more than they care for their people so they send them to their deaths.

All those people that stayed home there was a 100% survival rate. Hamas stated that 53 terrorists that were killed were part of the Hamas Military wing. The 100% of all the others were paid actors who were bussed towards the borderline, and even a mother got paid to bring here DEAD BABY and got paid for bringing her dead baby and act as a casualty

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
