Who are the Houthi rebels attacking Red Sea ships? | BBC News

Published

on

Global supply chains could face severe disruption as a result of the world’s biggest shipping companies diverting journeys away from the Red Sea.

Attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on commercial vessels in recent weeks have resulted in many firms deciding to avoid one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

The Houthi group has declared its support for Hamas and has said it is targeting ships travelling to Israel.

But who are the Houthis? What are their motivations? And what are their links to Iran? The BBC’s analysis editor Ros Atkins explains.

Hamas has in 2018 recognised Israel within pre ‘67 borders. The commentator told a lie when he said Hamas wanted Israel gone.

Look who's involved, the usual suspects, the Western / Northern european, the ex- colonizers and slavers and imperialists.. .. france, the uk, and the United states!
The BBC should understand that the British Empire is the reason why the Middle East is a mess, and the British Empire is the reason why Iran is the way it is, remember england, Iran was a democracy until you decided to hook up with the United States and de-stabilized that region topple the government and appoint a king, all because they wanted to nationalize their oil. And you didn't like it🤔🤔… no country in the world has sovereignty, and will never have their own sovereignty until the United States imperialism and their little puppy that always follows them around.. (the uk!) Goes away… these eurocentric societies, … I tell you!!! there is no other group on our home planet earth, that is more dangerous than these people who come from the north of our planet.

Telling you this as an Arab who lives in the region and who is well educated about these groups. The houthis, isis, al qaeda, hamas, qasam, etc are all tools of the west and their leaders literally live in western countries or in countries allied with the west, and their existence is merely to conspire on others and gain diplomatic casus bellis to go rob some countries, even if these actions end up harming citizens in the west, a lot, but the west does not care, as they already sacrified 3000 Americans in 9/11 to gain war justification with grand scale, after ussr collapsed and usa became the sole super power and so it wanted to expand militarily and rob others, as no one could stand against it at that time.

Five years on from the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan | BBC News

Published

on

It has been five years since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, as western forces left, imposing their extreme, ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam on millions of people.

Their return to power brought relative peace to the country after two decades of war.

But Afghan women have been erased from public life. Girls are banned from school from the age of 12, and aren’t allowed to go to university.

Public parks are also off limits to women – and they can’t travel abroad without a male companion.

Is another deadly flood coming to Nepal? | BBC News

Published

on

China has warned there is a “high risk” that a lake which formed after the recent landslide near the Nepal-Tibet border may breach its banks, causing a second flood downstream.

The warning comes after Wednesday’s deadly flash flood in the same area which has killed more than 500.

Scientists say it was triggered by the collapse of a mountain glacier into a river.

Did Emily ruin Paris? | The Global Story

Published

on

The Netflix show Emily in Paris has been lauded by French President Emmanuel Macron, who presented its creator, Darren Star, with the prestigious Légion d’Honneur last year.

“You make France shine across the world,” Macron said.

Many critics disagree. The programme, about a hapless American marketing executive living a glamorous and romantic fantasy in the French capital, is due to return for its sixth and final season later this year.

Some Parisians have complained that the series is full of cliches. And they worry that the tourism boost created by the show is changing the city they live in.

How do blockbuster TV series and iconic films reshape our cities, for better or worse?

The Global Story host, Tristan Redman, heads to the fifth arrondissement, while producers Hannah Moore and Xandra Ellin get the picture in London and New York.

At least 20 people have been killed after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia early on Saturday, the nation’s disaster mitigation agency has said.
