Global supply chains could face severe disruption as a result of the world’s biggest shipping companies diverting journeys away from the Red Sea.
Attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on commercial vessels in recent weeks have resulted in many firms deciding to avoid one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
The Houthi group has declared its support for Hamas and has said it is targeting ships travelling to Israel.
But who are the Houthis? What are their motivations? And what are their links to Iran? The BBC’s analysis editor Ros Atkins explains.

US President Donald Trump has said he thinks “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president” as he responded to Volodymyr Zelensky’s criticism of the US diesel deal with Russia.
The Ukrainian president warned a new deal to release millions of tonnes of Russian diesel into the US would provide Moscow with money to continue its war against his nation, calling it a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump told reporters outside the White House on Saturday that Zelensky “wants to make problems for the world” by continuing to authorise attacks on Russian refineries.

Ukraine will resume strikes on Russian oil refineries, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, as he accused the US of withdrawing crucial support.
He also accused the US of withdrawing intelligence-sharing on Russian strikes, and said restrictions to Starlink satellite services used by Ukraine’s military were deliberate.
Ukraine’s military relies on US early-warning alerts of incoming Russian aerial attacks to mount air defences, limiting successful strikes, while Starlink internet links are used throughout its war effort to guide drones and protect its skies.
But on Tuesday night, Starlink suddenly and unexpectedly restricted the speed at which drones could fly while still maintaining internet connection. This disrupted some battlefield “missions”, a top Ukrainian official said, and hampered Kyiv’s ability to protect itself from incoming Russian attacks.
Elon Musk, whose Space X company operates Starlink, suggested that the US government may have been behind the restrictions, adding that Starshield, the military-grade sister service to Starlink, is controlled by the US government, and “any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately [the US president]”.
The US government has not commented.

Telling you this as an Arab who lives in the region and who is well educated about these groups. The houthis, isis, al qaeda, hamas, qasam, etc are all tools of the west and their leaders literally live in western countries or in countries allied with the west, and their existence is merely to conspire on others and gain diplomatic casus bellis to go rob some countries, even if these actions end up harming citizens in the west, a lot, but the west does not care, as they already sacrified 3000 Americans in 9/11 to gain war justification with grand scale, after ussr collapsed and usa became the sole super power and so it wanted to expand militarily and rob others, as no one could stand against it at that time.
