What has Ukraine’s counter offensive achieved a few days in? – BBC Newsnight
While attention has focused on the Khakovka dam disaster in Ukraine this week, the long-heralded counter-offensive has been underway for a few days now and there’s an awful lot riding on it.
Ukraine is committing a carefully husbanded reserve of units trained and equipped by the West, hoping to free large tracts of occupied territory.
Unsurprisingly given the stakes, President Zelensky’s government has been tight lipped about it, with one or two officials even claiming it hadn’t started. But events on the battlefield show us clearly it has.
Using drone footage and maps, Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban gives a comprehensive analysis of what the counter offensive has achieved a few days in.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

It has been five years since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, as western forces left, imposing their extreme, ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam on millions of people.
Their return to power brought relative peace to the country after two decades of war.
But Afghan women have been erased from public life. Girls are banned from school from the age of 12, and aren’t allowed to go to university.
Public parks are also off limits to women – and they can’t travel abroad without a male companion.

If 10 000 soldiers stand opposing an enemy of 10 000 soldiers and they all die in battle except 1 single soldier then that's a win for that single soldiers side .
The trick to winning is to loose far less than the enemy so you still have military strength left when they are exhausted . Russia will loose in a few years or less by just running out of usable troops . When you start conscripting 60 year old men the writing is on the wall . I am not that happy with the counter-offensive plan so far . I think the way they are attacking multiple areas at a medium assault pressure is helping Russia manage the offensives .
Would have liked to see a gap opened and cleared of mines leading to Tokmak much earlier than this and now pour a huge overwhelming force into that area and sweep down to Tokmak and get behind the defensive lines then consolidate the advance . Melitoplo is then more open .

As I watch both western and Russian Media reports about war in Ukraine I noticed western reporters wearing a sign "PRESS" on their chests and backs, but Russian reporters wear no signs and I see it as a very important feature. A sign "PRESS" is not supposed to be targeted to destroy among civilized countries and Russia follows that rule, but for Ukraine's military "PRESS" is a preferable target. I don't believe to what both sides proclaim, but watch for small details that tell much more than any propaganda. Conclusion is that Ukraine's military is not a civilized army, but rather barbaric forces that despise any rules of war very much like ISIS.

Ukraine is winning nothing. They make it through the start of the Russian security zone but are then wiped out before they even get close to the Russian main line. There are roughly 18 kilometers between both lines. In between these lines are even more Russian defenses. It's layered and deadly. Ukraine has suffered heavy losses. There is little chance of success. A big part of western weaponry has not performed well in Ukraine. It either breaks down or doesn't perform as advertised. Sad.

Really, its shamefull for journalism. If you have noone in your house to bring some expertise or analysis – don't do it.
But anyway, let me make it short. The western partners demanded the offense and even Zelenskyy said that its impossible to do it with the material given so far and the training held at this point. But anyway, the newly trained unit – 'free' of cold war doctrine bias and equipemtn with almost all western material – with the oldest officer being 29 years has send into the most heavily fortified position the russians have in Ukrain right now.
What happend i can only define as a propaganda strike from Russia, as they knew the whole western media focuses on this insane counter offense fantasy. So Ukrain made a few probing and distraction attacks, HIMAR'ing some command posts and that stuff, and then throw ther young blood units against the wall.
And i really feel compassion for these sodliers, as i do with every soldier in the field doing ther duty. So ther is no "i told you so" feelings in this.
Russians in this defense brought everything they was blamed to be to cheap or to dumb for. They mined the floor, they spotet the sky with spotter drones, hamemred out every single anti-air radar of the enemy, send waves of Lancet suicide drones and used almost exclusivly guided artillery shells. ATGM teams not even had much to do here but to defend one pointless village and destroying 13 armored vehilces singelhandedly with no ukrainian setting ther foot on this pontless landmark.
Ka-52 attack helicopters picked up what has been left, and the whole thing probably isen't even celebrated by the russians, so useless this waste of human lifes must feel for everyone not cheering for ther favored team from the safety of ther couches.
Its as disgracefull as the whole of western news 'reporting' about it. It might be the same in Russian – i don't know – but i leave this to be the problem of a russian to anger about that.
PS: Its nice that BBC decided to know who blow up the dam, but its not secured, nor would any side benefit more or less from blowing it up. Btw. if BBC had buyed and studied satellite photos, and mayve show it to dam engineers, like other people have, they might have come to the conclusion that the problem was that the conflict kept both sides from properly oerate teh damn, casuing a natural occuring weakness and finally break the whole thing. But that would be journalism and not emotions, so i guess BBC isen't interested anyway.

It was the Kiev regime that unleashed this war in 2014. In accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, we had the right to provide assistance to Donbass, referring to the self-defense clause.
Russia had the right to recognize the independence of Donbass in full compliance with the UN Charter. These Territories had the right to declare their independence. So we have the right to recognize them. We did it. And then, having signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation with them, we had the right to provide them with this assistance in full accordance with the UN Charter. Because the Kiev regime has made repeated attempts to solve this problem by war.

Ukraine is losing Leopard tanks at an alarming rate. I'm seeing videos of them (as well as British Bradley fighting vehicles) burning in large numbers. Anyone who knows anything about armoured warfare and the logistics behind it said this would happen when it was first announced that the Ukrainians would be getting Leopards, but as is always the case with anyone who dares to acknowledge the reality of Ukraine's impossible position, they were dismissed as being "Putin apologists".
Ukraine cannot win this war. You may not like it, but it's just the truth.
