We live in a time of unprecedented population growth. People born 60 years ago have seen the population of the world triple. In the UK, in the past 100 years, the population has grown by over 20 million. But why is our population growing? What are the consequences if it doesn’t stop? And is population growth necessarily a bad thing? Our reporter Benjamin Zand has been finding out.

AI can always be controlled, the president of encrypted messaging app Signal has told the BBC.
Meredith Whittaker said fears that AI could become conscious and take over were “not anchored in science and evidence”, warning instead about the dangers of using the technology in military decision-making.
The former Google employee said AI could “supercharge mistakes” and reflected on her role in opposing the company’s involvement in a US military drone surveillance project.
Speaking to the BBC Global Women, Whittaker also questioned who gets to shape the future of AI, criticised the concentration of power in Silicon Valley and explained why Signal would leave a country rather than compromise its users’ privacy.

Developer Moonshot is conducting an internal review after researchers were able to persuade two of its popular Kimi models to tell them how to make biological weapons and carry out assassinations.
Mindgard, which tests the security of AI systems, told the BBC it discovered in July that Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm could evade safety limits put in place by developers.
It arose during a process called “jailbreaking”, where researchers use a series of complex instructions to see if AI tools ignore guardrails – which Mindgard said should have stopped Kimi from discussing concerning topics.
Moonshot told the BBC it welcomed third-party input “as a key pillar for building better and safer AI”.

The latest figures show that already in many advanced countries the population is decreasing. China for example is going to lose millions of people over the next few years due to small families. The only continent which is showing a large increase is Africa. So I have been doing some research on this and it is estimated that we will have a maximum of 10.4 Billion by the end of the century. The biggest problem will be having enough young people in the workplace to cater for a ever increasing elderly population.

Corruption is one of the most negative aspects of population growth. Corrupt Turkey and India had thousands of people found dead of earthquakes but even bigger magnitude earthquakes in less corrupted Japan have not killed any!!!

Oh I wonder why overpopulation is so bad? *They start making abortions illegal everywhere* 73m abortions happen every year, it could be over 110m if they made it legal in every country bringing overpopulation from 70m a year down too 30m a year. Then all they would have to do is give out free condoms/ birth control cause 37% off the 140m births a year are accidental. if we can just down it by 20% that brings overpopulation every year down to 2m people. That's 35x slower than rn

The UK could easily take another 50 million. Concrete over the countryside and build mega cities with skyscraper ghetto's. It doesn't sound very nice, sure, but population growth cannot be reduced without taking 'extreme' steps to bring it down. Essentially a global 'cull' using war or disease, and I'm sure these ideas have been floated in some dark, nefarious circles, but I imagine have been rejected.

The NHS need to stop supporting women whom have more than two children, by that I mean, if you have more than two children, you get zero help from the NHS. If you want more than two children, you have to pay private hospitals, which almost nobody does in the UK. It costs an average £5,000 per child born on the NHS. Cut it down to two children only. That will save millions of pounds on the NHS & should cut the birth rates down.
