How Ukrainian poetry captures the tragedy of Russia’s war – BBC News

Published

on

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues and accusations of war crimes mount.

The UN Human Rights Council has ordered an investigation into possible atrocities north of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

Images, numbers and facts can over time blur into one and often, it’s artists and writers who manage to find long-lasting words that speak to tragedy.

As a poet from the UK, I would like to have heard a few actual examples of Ukrainian anti-war poetry (by Ukrainian poets) in this feature by the BBC. I wrote this short poem for the people of Ukraine in March this year.

And now the birds are singing for the dead and dying
brightening the ruins with the fulsomeness of song.
While fragile culture burns, defiant flags are flying,
for future generations won’t forget where they belong.

Ukraine and Russia have probably come to an agreement to swap POWs of Mariupol. If anything happens to Ukrainian solders from Mariupol the Ukrainian solders will fight even harder. Ukraine is starting to take areas around Kharkiv and continue south from there toward Luhansk and Donetsk to drive the Russians south and eventually along the coast to Mariupol thus cutting off Russian flow of weapons, food and fuel to Russian solders. This is potentially going to be a long war drawn out war and whoever can keep the supply chain going for money, weapons, fuel and food will win this war. George S. Patton at the end of WWII asked for resources to push the Russian army back to Moscow. Dwight D. Eisenhower and president Roosevelt thought it a bad idea. Volodymyr Zelenskyy president of Ukraine is finishing the job that George S. Patton was never allowed to finish. That was one of his greatest disappointments in life. George S. Patton if he were alive would be proud of how well and how brave the Ukrainian army is fighting. They are kicking the Rousky army where it hurts the most and hopefully all the way back to Moscow so Russia will never invade Europe again. George S. Patton can rest in peace seeing this from wherever he is now. Slava Ukraine. Very sad.

Didn't know how well poets were revered in other countries. I'm a 50+ yrs old American & the last poet to get any sort of recognition here was Maya Angelou; she was a pre-21st century artist mind you. Don't know who could fill her shoes in the new millennium.

Possible ear crimes??!! There is no possible about any of it. It's fact and too much to even fathom. Putin and the Russian military are terrorist's in the extreme. Guilty of targeting and destroying civilian infrastructures, not military!, torturing, raping and murdering civilian's (including children!), genocide of a people (see the mass graves in Mariupol), forcibly removing Ukrainian citizen's to "filtration camps" in Russia with no way back to Ukraine, booby trapping and mining the areas they have been in for future deaths of citizen's. And the list if atrocities goes on. They are coward's and terrorist's waging war on the citizen's of Ukraine, instead of the military. And blaming anyone and everyone else for them illegally invading and attacking a sovereign democracy, a Nation that was causing no threat to Russia, in fact, Russia had been illegally taking territory from Ukraine for 8 long years already. Russia was the only aggressor here and always has been.

That the CCP has already begun to mobilize to attack Taiwan. If the war begins, the United States should immediately crush the small islands in the South China Sea, take Hainan Island first, and establish the southern beachhead, the Miyako strait in the Bashi Strait, and one aircraft carrier fleet each, and one in the Pacific Ocean east of Taiwan. The fleet directly attacked the CCP’s command system, that is, Beijing, and the various military command headquarters of the CCP, and took down the personnel who ordered and commanded the operations. The fishing boats, ships, warships and military aircraft in the strait were all directed at long-range and short-range, regardless of the size of the ship.

When fascists from Russia occupied the territories of Ukraine in 2014, the inhabitants of fascist Russia were satisfied with the actions of the attacking authorities. When Putin started the war in 2022, the Russian army bombed peaceful cities, killed civilians, children, raped and robbed. The people of Russia support this war. Terrible war propaganda is working on Russian television. Russia is a country of fascist invaders!!!

I think this should be a rule of the Geneva convention :

So at the end of a war
We count the casualties of children on each side

And we take the equal amount of men from every country involved
    And execute them publicly

The world SHOULD NOT allow kids to die
In a war for money and power

And yea we should start with America and Germany for any kids they murdered in Japan and aushwitz

    Extension to the rule :
If a country as kids fighting in the war
We kill equal amounts of women and men from
    There country

O:47 Why??? Because Russian militaries, the Russian government and the Russian society are completely insane and uncivilized. After the fall of the USSR many barbaric people in Russia started to think about a resurrection of their brutal empire. Russian authorities and propaganda started to spread their aggressions, and now it's on the peak… They're absolutely dangerous and mad. They even believe that the Russian language is the best. That's not true, of course. I was born in Russia, but I hate criminal Russian soldiers and everyone, supporting them.

The tragedy has been imposed upon both the Ukraine and Russia by the brutal greed of the West! What was wrong with Russia's wish for the Ukraine to remain neutral – – like a Finland or a Switzerland! Russia even provided the Ukraine with heavily subsidised energy, other financial and economic backing, but the West was not satisfied, and had to ruin it all!

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
