The EU is simply a free trade agreement. Meant to save money. Which has made itself, by unceasing incremental legislation, grow monstrously large, invasive and debilitating, like a cancer. It is at the moment, in my opinion, a steel hand in a velvet glove, itching to withdraw itself and become a dictatorship in time. By every means and influence possible, by hook and by crook, by media and powers, it is mangling the British people's economy and democracy and propagandising people's minds. It is a vampirous parasite, leeching the finances out of every nation without being able to balance its books. It is a dark force, dressed in light. It is power hungry, profligate and arrogant. I can imagine if Hitler had survived WWII, or any of his followers took up his torch of world domination, that they might have had a secret meeting in which they realised that military domination is hard, but financial domination is easy. Because that is exactly the way this free trade agreement has played out.

I've voted by post and the ballot paper lists all the candidates for each part of the UK in order of how the individuals will get elected. Therefore, it isn't actually a "closed list" system. I could see and research not only the party but also the candidates, and see the order in which they would be elected. The D'Hont formula applies exactly as described in this video.

I would like to hear more about possible coalitions within the next EU parliament, as the anti-EU parties are not likely to take part in it and as a result the current coalition of the EPP and S&D will not suffice. What are could be the effect of joining ALDE or the greens (or both) to the next EU coalition?

Pretty sure my local parish council has more political power than the European Parliament. Our council can actually make bylaws and run the transport system.

It's odd that the STV system reassigns excess votes from the initial winning party first instead of reassigning second preference for the lowest scoring party first.

One thing to keep in mind is that people tend to vote for bigger parties to avoid their vote to be wasted. So Labour and the Tories get an even more non-proportional representation.

I would only comment that the focus on the method of calculating the seats is not really illuminating though as to why this works (don't worry all the other media outlets do this as well). I would recommend Prof Helen Wilson's D'Hondt explanation from UCL.
This explains that the process you've described is a method of calculating the cost (in votes) for each of the seats so that a. The right number of seats are awarded to each party and, b. The total number of seats is also correct for that region.
The final important output in the last iteration of the D'Hondt method, which is never explicitly mentioned, is the actual cost in votes of each seat for that constituency given the votes cast. It would be interesting to compare those costs across the UK. I bet there is a huge variation. Hope that helps.

the eu parliament has no power and only 10% of MEPs are British hence why we brits don't turnout for EU parliament elections…..holding this vote in may is a betrayal to majority who voted out in '16

I would disagree that the UK EU election system favours small parties – if the smaller parties don't get as many votes as the two 'main' parties in the UK, they will never have an MEP, especially if there are several small parties in the same constituency, chasing a small number of allocated MEPs – as in your example, the Greens have little chance of winning because of the d'hont system. The UK manages to fiddle even PR to the advantage of the 'big two'.
