What is ChatGPT, the AI software taking the internet by storm? – BBC News

Published

on

ChatGPT is a viral sensation which is taking the internet by storm.

From writing essays to composing poetry and limericks, the artificial intelligence is the most accessible tool of its kind to date – and anyone can start up a conversation with the chatbot.

But while its popularity is soaring amid reports that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is closing in on a $10bn investment from Microsoft, there are fears the technology could cause more harm than good.

Schools in New York City have already banned ChatGPT amid fears pupils could use the technology to do their homework, while the way that the AI learns means that it has absorbed harmful material which exists on the web.

For me it is not “knowledge democratized”, because it starts giving knowledge but then it uses it to replace humans in many tasks. That’s what it does more. This devaluates human knowledge and skills. A technology that compromises so many jobs and causes potential widespread unemployment through knowledge is not democratized knowledge, is digital knowledge dictatorship to me.

Stating that "…Wikipedia is fact…" is both wrong and biased.
    Great "journalism".

There is nothing wrong with asking the AI to suggest literature worth reading for a given paper, to then produce something of substantial quality that is the student's work. You will see very quickly if you actually ask ChatGPT to write essays that you really can do it much better. It can do the task but you're going to see a lot of 'in conclusion's and formulaic writing, which isn't the best thing if you want a work that is good, engages with the issue well, but also presents new ideas that are meritable and allows for further discussion.

All new technologies are deeply flawed, and in time, problems will be solved to extract the maximum amount of money from the targeted markets through market and government manipulation.

I told it to write a story of Barack Obama and Jerry Seinfeld taking a cross-country road trip in Seinfeld's midnight-blue 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. During their trip, they met a samurai grandmaster named Miyamoto, trained under Miyamoto's wing, became samurai warriors themselves, and fought vampires with Sam and Dean from Supernatural. Not sure if anybody will ever be able to top that.

I used chatgpt many times and it's not good at all… Calculations mistakes (doesn't understand that 40 is a multiple of 5), data mistakes (it was inventing FCF data from companies I asked…), I also asked for a list IT services companies (IBM, ACN, INFY…) and it showed me computer selling companies like Apple, HP and Dell… It really, really… really sucks ! I'm patiently waiting for Bard !

ChatGPT was given a moral dilemma in which it said that the de*ths of millions of people was a better outcome than a single racial slur being uttered in private. Suffice it to say, we have nothing to fear from AI. Just its developers.

It's important to teach college students how to use AI because so many jobs in the future will depend on it. We are entering a whole new age of Computing and the Workplace will require AI. To me this may be as big or bigger than the rise of Google Search. Google and Microsoft know that, and they are investing tens of Billions of dollars trying to first to offer it to users. We do though need to acknowledge and understand that it's answers are only as good as it's database.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Published

on

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News

Published

on

A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.

Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.

At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.

So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?

AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.
