Russian soldier pleads guilty in first war crimes trial of Ukraine conflict – BBC News
A Russian soldier has pleaded guilty to killing an unarmed civilian, in Ukraine’s first war crimes trial since the war began.
Vadim Shishimarin admitted shooting a 62-year-old man, who was allegedly on a bicycle, near the village of Chupakhivka in the eastern Sumy region of Ukraine.
The 21-year-old faces life in prison. Prosecutors say more trials are to come, after identifying other potential war crimes committed by Russian soldiers.
Moscow has denied its troops have targeted civilians.

The UK government has been defeated in court – for a second time – for not doing enough to meet its targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Environmental campaigners argued that the energy minister signed off the government’s climate plan without evidence it could be achieved.
The High Court ruled on Friday that the government will now be required to redraft the plan again.
In response the government defended its record on climate action.

According to the news I have been watching, Russia is committing crimes against Ukraine. It shouldn't happen in the first place, and, since it happened, there should be a trial. However, it seems completely unfair to me that a small fish will spend his life in prison (of course it's not always like that because of possible future negotiations) and the big shark is still there commanding his troops to murder many others just for his name to be a glorious part of the Russian (and World) History. ALL those involved (President, Ministers, Generals, and soldiers) should receive the same sentence. But, we all know, it depends on politics, the Nuremberg tribunal is there to prove it.

A child who was sent to a war without really knowing where and for what. I only read black and white here! At the age of 21, who of you knew what to believe in, which ideals to represent, what to define as right for yourself or as good? At 21, the children today neither know what the Cold War means nor fascism. These kids got a gun in their hands or under their feet and they were told to shoot it. If you refuse, you will be court-martialled, or your sister will not be allowed to study, or your father will lose his job and your mother will be ashamed of you. I grew up in exactly such a system. This is another tragedy. The much greater tragedy is 90% of your hate comments. You get drunk on suffering, demarcation and your quick guilty verdicts. I hope the woman can forgive the child someday. I hope we can all forgive ourselves at some point.
