Andy Burnham takes aim at Brexit, Thatcherism and Britain’s economic record as he sets out his vision for the country in his first speech as Prime Minister. Burnham pays tribute to Keir Starmer and outlines his plans to deliver economic growth, promising “fiscal responsibility” while arguing that Britain has taken “a series of wrong turns” since the 1980s. He says Brexit “compounded the damage” and pledges to build a pro-business, innovation-led economy across the UK.
Burnham also addresses some of the major issues facing Britain, including the small boats crisis, prison early release and the privatisation of water companies and utilities. Drawing on his experience as Mayor of Manchester, the Prime Minister explains how his time in local government has shaped his approach to leading the country. He concludes by promising that Britain can “believe again” and “bring back hope” as he sets out his ambitions for the future.
Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch wastes no time in challenging the new Prime Minister, mocking Burnham’s first day in office and warning that being Prime Minister is “a very different job” from being Mayor of Manchester. Badenoch grills him over defence spending, the small boats crisis, tax rises and his criticism of Thatcherism, accusing Burnham of wanting to take Britain “back to the 1970s”.

You should be asking exactly how much in fines have these water companies actually paid? And as importantly, if not moreso, where did this money go and how was it used for public interest in cleaning up and reversing the damage done!

This sewage discharge is easy to work out its the progress of new builds in towns, cities and rise in population, demand for Sewage Works will be above their capacity. The additional new town or street storm drains are only going one way into rivers and our seas. This will only get worse and worse as immigration and population rises. We were warned we did not listen, we will keep taking greenbelt till there is no more poluting killing wildlife and fish. Greed greed greed.

I live next to a small river near Nottingham city centre. I moved in around 2001 and there is a large sewer overflow outlet that runs out under my garden and into the river. There were several occasions where raw sewage was being discharged and I made Severn Trent aware. My constant reports to them made what was one of their least known outlets to one on top of their list. Investigations led them to finding a major sewer was getting blocked but because of this overflow they were not aware of the problem. Over the last several years they put up booms to stop effluent going into the river and performed operations to suck it out whilst they worked on putting in sensors in the main sewer to alert them when it was running high and needed attention before overflowing. That work was completed around 2016 and since then the discharge into the river has been minimal. Their teams now come to check the outlet around 6 times a year. During Covid I entered the river to do a clean up of tyres and other items and ended up filling two large bins full of wet stinking rubbish. Contacting the environment agency to ask if they would take it away I was advised I should not have been in the river without a permit and that they regularly check the river for cleansing which is not true. Additionally, as the rubbish was now out of the river it was not their responsibility to take away. The council would not take the bins either. A few weeks passed and the guys from Severn Trent came for one of their regular visits and all was clear as normal from the outlet. I mentioned the problem I had with the rubbish and they said they would take it there and then! I can’t vouch for all the water companies or indeed the whole of the Severn Trent area but I can say in this instance the water company has done incredible work to stop major sewage outfalls into the river. Also where government run bodies have turned their back where a member of the community has taken their own time to make things better for nature and the neighbourhood it was Severn Trent that took it away without question. Things aren’t always as clean cut as we hear in a headline and I’m pleased to say the wildlife in the area is thriving with fish, ducks, moorhens, swans, canadian geese, kingfishers, herons and egrets.

This seems quite simple, without clean water regulations this will lead to water companies and any normal company being able to give backhanders to mps and government to dump sht in our waterways and not clean our water.
There is no way people can let this happen.
