Over the weekend Johnson defended his record on the food and fuel shortages, insisting that they were actually a good thing, pushing up wages (especially among the poorest groups). That seems like a bit of a difficult argument, so in this video we unpick what this means for Britain and if he’s right that wages will increase as a result.

What the government says the rate of inflation is and what it actually is are 2 very different things. Petrol has gone up 10% in the past 6 months, wood and some other DIY materials have gone up about 20% in the last 3 years, we don't even know how much gas and electric will be going up yet this year…
The real cost of living for different people doesn't always relate to the manipulated official rate of inflation.

What is not understandable is how British think they will survive in a mondialised world with super powers like China and India on the rise? Alone? Making poor deals with Australia, Canada and the USA? UK was once an empire as Portugal and Spain were. UK do not understand that this empire is over? What is your plan? You don’t have any industry (not even cars anymore since jaguar and Land Rover are Indian brands now). Making movies and pop stars won’t feed the British people. Uk produces nothing. Even the financial City is going down at a pace nobody suspected. What is your plan guys ? Brexit was a terrible Ego mistake…

I've not seen my wages increase, and I work in one of those supposed essential worker positions that were being clapped for on Thursdays. I'm earning the same hourly rate now that I was earning back in 2018. If anything, I'm poorer now than I ever was, because I'm losing more money in taxes, and everything I buy is costing 20-30p more, which really adds up over the course of a week.
The fact that people still cheer for/defend this government either reveals that much of the media coverage is just plants, or the population is generally too brainwashed/stupid to see what is literally hitting them in their pay checks. Either way, it's demoralising. You'd have thought 10 years of Austerity for the bottom 80% coupled with a pandemic all while the top 20% become richer than ever would actually kick enough people up the arse to want to do something about it. But no.

High wages are pointless if you don't have the people to fill the positions. Also those wages will plummet if the positions do get filled. Supply and Demand works for jobs as well.

Great analysis as always. A few points though.
1. They are raising minimum wage significantly.
2. Boris makes a distinctive point. Low wages are rising. Brexit was not about average earners but carers, HGV drivers, supermarket workers. I work in care recruitment and I'm seeing advertisings for £12.50ph all over the place in care. Unheard of a year ago.
3. 1% doesn't sound much but that took me 4 years to get as a carer. This is massive.

This is essentially true, don't get me wrong, I voted to remain. But, my old manager told me once, he had the choice of hiring two French twins (gorgeous though they were) for five hundred quid each, because they didn't speak English, or an English person for a grand. Which do you think he went with?

IT COULD HELP DRIVERS WAGES WHICH HAVE NOT INCREASED SINCE 1998 AT ALL!
BUT THE MUCH GREATER PROBLEM IS THAT SUPPLIES ARE STILL STUCK IN THE PORTS DUE TO A 54,000 BACKLOG IN DVLA CAUSED BY LOCKDOWNS AND THE DVLA UNION WHO KEEP BRINGING STAFF OUT ON STRIKE.
WE NEED AN INCREASE IN WAGES AND A PRICE FREEZE. BUT WE NEED THE BACKLOG CLEARING IN DVLA OR WE WILL FACE A NATIONAL DEPRESSION. ITS NOTHING TO DO WITH BREXIT!!!

Increasing minimum wage causes inflation as well.
There's 2 sides of the argument, one is that the wages aren't high enough that's why certain jobs attract immigrants. The other is that wages are low cause they are surpressed by immigrants.
I believe it's just a matter of balancing both of these.

the same thing in the United States, wages are stagnant. Automation will also destroy jobs. People don't want to talk about that, as many people have lost their jobs, those who haven't don't care, but when it happens to them, they are very upset as if the world is upside down. Others can do the jobs much better and machines can do it even more better, but what will be our future. salary they give you without working ?
