Inside Europe’s trailblazing hybrid trains – BBC News

These trains are first tri-mode trains to enter passenger service, after starting running on routes in Italy at the end of 2022.

As well as being fitted with pantograph overhead power and a standard diesel engine, they also have with a battery pack power unit and can be switched between modes.

    To all the people shitting on my country, 80% of Italy’s railways are electrified. And expansions are planned. Don’t act as though we only use diesel trains. It may suck for everything else, but if there’s one things Italy does fairly well, it has to be railway transport.

    Do villages in the middle of nowhere, whose railway lines are yet to be electrified, deserve to have the same death traps from the 70s? I don’t think so. This is the alternative Italy is providing them with.

    Just shut up if you don’t know how things work here.

    It's good news because we can reduce the pollution. But we need more efficient train in future so research more and develop efficient battery for the tarin or make hydrogen energy used train both are environment friendly and we believe that the future. Looking to our country India 90 % of train are converted to electric and the 10 % are diesel. So in future we want environment friendly train and reduce the diesel train.

    Diesel is a king who cannot be deposed. Firstly master the new technology before getting rid of the tried and tested and yes don't forget the cost aspect .

    What on earth do you mean by "the direction of power for trains is towards that of battery power?"
    it absolutely is not. overhead lines are, in pretty much every regard, a far better system that is rather trivial to implement given that trains run on rails.

    I have work and i no have car ,i i get metro one to another . I wonder how US and UK and other country smilar rwmote and small budget to deal with auto electric plan , it for sure that the patrolium and gasoline will be more less one day , cause war will be measaure erupt .

    Nice to see that it's not just in the US that rail operators are cheap as fuck and refuse to electrify all of their lines, forcing the construction of expensive yet sub-par multi-mode engines like this. Battery locomotives are so bad they are basically a scam.

    There was a video on the YouTube channel Fully Charged a few years ago about battery electric trains, and back then there were already a couple of routes that had been converted to battery electric replacing the diesel engines for batteries without any problems.

    Over here there's duo-mode buses, as in a pantograph and battery packs. The former charge the latter while in the area with overhead wires. Other than the core network they're flexible in their routing.

    Rail is the future if the government puts back into operation a lot of the lines they shutdown in the countryside . Without the restart of many of the non main lines there wilol be no change of going all electric for cars .

    Trains have operating life/timeframe of 20+ years. Hybrids are not the way to go! There are multiple options by now for battery trains e.g. by Siemens and Stadler, also hydrogen options e.g. from Alstom. There are several projects now in Germany, where rail tracks will be equipped with pantographs only in stations. Inbetween battery range is enough to cover ranges of up to 200km. Diesel hybrid is a vehicle to continue selling the fossil tech.

    This seems to miss a few tricks. It would seem ideal to use the train stopping to regenerate the batteries, but this was not mentioned.
    It is really so difficult to electrify all rail lines?
    Given the efficiency of a train over other transport the diesel option is really not bad.

    GWR received the first train (tri-mode) in the UK able to run on overhead and third-rail electric lines, as well as under its own diesel power, which was scheduled to be introduced on services between Reading and Gatwick in early 2021. They never got into service for a variety of reasons, including being too heavy for steep inclines.

    Electric pantograph trains just work, especially in the UK. Hybrid or hydrogen isn’t needed for trains here imo

    The UK might as well benefit from having new hybrid trains to replace the aging diesel trains that does need replacing including in Southwest England, Wales, North of England and Scotland. And to make our railways lot more greener to reduce Co2 emissions and to cut down on greenhouse emissions that is causing climate change.

    Slightly misleading I places. All diesel trains already are electric trains, the diesel runs generators to run electric motors. Essentially, till now they were all 'self charging' hybrids, this is just giving them a bigger battery and a plug-in option.

    Rail operations group and GBRF in the uk are currently taking delivery of tri mode locomotives, for freight use. The class 93 and class 99s can run on 25kv ,diesel or 600hp batteries.

    It might be a step in the right direction, but at the same time we also have Hydrogen powered trains available for two manufacturers who can completely remove the diesel a d can otherwise reach same distances between tank stops. So I am not sure why Hitachi is going in that direction?

    CAF is building battery bi mode trains for Germany and the planned journey without wires is 77km without re-charging

    I wonder why battery trains aren't quite there yet? It takes a lot less energy per kg to sustain the inertia of a train with steel wheels on steel rails than it does to sustain the inertia of a rubber tyred vehicle on an asphalt road. Maybe the initial power surge needed to get the train rolling? But the predictability of trains in combination with regenerative breaking should help with these moments of high energy use?

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.
