Yesterday the Tories acted to defend MP Owen Paterson, who’s been accused of breaking parliamentary rules. In response, many in the opposition (and even some on the right) accused the Tories of manipulating the rules to back their own; with many suggesting that this is the return of “Tory Sleaze”. So in this video we explain what Paterson did, why the Conservatives defended him & what this tells us about the future of British politics.

I had to stop watching this when Chris Bryant (Chairman of the Standards Committee) started to talk. This is a man who accepted a 'free' holiday which he did not declare. This is the man sitting in judgement of others.

The word Tory originates from Gaelic to describe an outlaw, or a robber that is noted for outrages and cruelty.
However, because Conservatives assumed the name it has also been rebranded to imply that the word originated from the Irish word toir, meaning to give, grant and bestow – clearly to their own.
These days it would seem both versions are appropriate.

He’s sending the message to other MPs that if you experience a tragedy feel free to steal, lie and break the law generally. That’s what I got from this.

Meanwhile an OAP doesn’t pay council tax and gets imprisoned. These politicians sit down and roar with laughter at us a couple of times a day, I’m sure – we’re seen as a joke, fools.

The left are salivating at this but they shouldnt get their hopes up. The general public do not care about political scandals, this wont cause a swing to the left in the UK im afraid.

Hancock setting his sister up as a PPE firm then giving her a government contract. Sleaze behond belief. I would go to prison for insider trading. Another day in the office for the Tories.

    December 27, 2023 at 5:10 pm

I'm a member of the conservative party. They have already lost the next general election. I could not bring myself to vote for them again. Not just on this issue. IR35 and buy to let taxes have ended my career and I have no way I can now retire.

Why do people vote for these vermin. The day after He has your vote hes in the HOC and is back on the Tory lobbying circuit. Couldnt give a toss about his constituancy voters. Hes done nothing for them. just google it

  20. @jamienash5263

    December 27, 2023 at 5:10 pm

Committees and the house need more power, just as the electoral commission needs teeth. We're failing democratically when the independent panels that judge the government and mps can't actually implement their recommendations

  21. @brucetownsend691

    December 27, 2023 at 5:10 pm

I think I speak for all Australians when I say “stop badmouthing kangaroos!” The idea that kangaroos would participate in holding a dodgy judicial proceeding is just human projection.

  22. @mindyourownbastardbu

    December 27, 2023 at 5:10 pm

I think the Tories were doing this because Patterson was doing what many MPs do, but they felt he was being targeted specifically because of his political stance on Brexit.
