ARIA, Dominic Cumming’s brainchild, is a bold plan to set Britain on a scientific trajectory post Brexit. If successful proponents argue that it could turn Britain into a scientific superpower unshackled from the EU. Is this true though, and what does the new ARIA bill actually make happen?

Yesterday an update on the Sue Gray Report was published. This was big news for Johnson and it led to one of the most interesting sessions in Parliament that we’ve seen for some time. But aside from drama and excitement, what does this mean? What’s inside the Gray report & could it be the end for Johnson?

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has exited the European Union per democratic mandate and has adopted a meritocratic immigration policy that selects exclusively according to capability and character, regardless of where is the world someone happens to come from.

Less of the low quality low income EU immigration we don't need, more of the high quality non-EU STEM professionals we do need

This fantastic country is beginning its emergence as a world class high intellect STEM based economy, something that would simply not have been possible whilst still an EU member.

I agree with Duncan below, the idea is good, but in practice, it'll be tax money spent to develop a new idea that is given to a company to monetise.

Good idea in theory. Very much doubt this government intends it to be anything more than a money tree for Tory donars.

This is just anotheer vehicle for the tories to extend their tentacles of corruption around what looks like a tax payer funded windfall! Anything associated with Cummings (remember One Web) should be ditched immediately – he's a con artist of the first water.

I thought I would add…. I work within UKRI – a multi billion£ reserch institution – that, up until ARIA , was the government go to science research. Part of Cummings plan was to massively boost spending within UKRI as well. This year we were expecting big (as in 50%) boosts in spending – a really massive deal. Last month the chancellor has more or less kept it flat cash (same as last 10years) – with promise of jam tommorow –2 years more in fact. Because of pandemic spending doesn'tr allow. Apparently
So guess what ? Flat cash means of course essentially big cuts as inflation is way ahead of RPI in our business. We have been struggling for years with flat cash and no pay rises . I guess people and instiutions have been hanging on waiting for this kind of big break – which is now promised in 2 more years – but of course we know will never happen.
Within the UKRI they are already hinting at 'appropriate headcounts' – newspeak for redundancies. We've gone from 'big spending is on its way – stand by to recruit' to 'your job isn't safe'

I'm pretty sure that ARiA – being Cummings brainchild – will be killed off ASAP by Johnson who is known for acts of revenge – at least gradually by being starved of cash each year. Science as a whole will likely suffer greatly in UK over next decade for this reason and for brexit. Thats my take . So far I've been on track with my predictions – unfortunately. Very grim times.

Best thing to ever happen to UK science. I did't like Cummings but it's refreshing for someone in the UK government to have given a priority to science outside of military research.

The cash will end up in government-supporters’ pockets, according to the doomsters. There is no evidence for this assertion; A judicial inquiry into the most egregious, similar allegations of the recent past found the same to be entirely without merit. Considering how long it has been in power. The ARPA scheme is an excellent idea and has every chance of great success.

Go back a hundred and fifty years and fundamental research used to be undertaken by genius level individuals in our Universities, that was until todays politicians privatised them as part of their lust for shareholder profits, now they are as risk averse as our bankers.

Aria sounds like an innovative idea, but doesn't it seem like it would be vulnerable to corruption and exploitation?

  24. @tobsstone

    December 27, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Just another scan to get public money into the hands of the elite. Dont doubt yourself, the peoples purse will not see any returns on this, successes will be turned into big business who will avoid taxes. puke puke puke

  25. @stewartleslie3292

    December 27, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Maybe when Labour get in at the next election they can use ARIA to develop the NHS IT system they wasted £10 Billion on and got nothing in return the last time they were in power.

  26. @michaeldavid2553

    December 27, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Seems Dominic Cummings already launched some high-risk projects, such as pushing Johnson to buy OneWeb satellites for the UK global positioning system in replacement of Galileo… satellites that unfortunately cannot be used in a positioning system… Fantastic idea to move public money into private pockets.

  27. @jacobwalker3086

    December 27, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Provided the funds go to the advancement of scientific and engineering knowledge and the rights of such products remain in the public domain, this is a fantastic move.

The best attitude the government has taken in years

  29. @NatTheWise

    December 27, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Good idea to take high risk opportunities by the horns but it needs to be under immense scrutiny, rather than be left to its own devices. The scope for corruption and lobbying it currently has is a PR disaster waiting to happen.
