Breakthrough in nuclear fusion announced by scientists – BBC News
A breakthrough in nuclear fusion has been announced by US scientists, bringing us a step closer to a potential source of near-limitless clean energy.
Physicists have pursued the technology for decades as it promises a potential source of near-limitless clean energy.
On Tuesday researchers confirmed they have overcome a major barrier – producing more energy from a fusion experiment than was put in.
But experts say there is still some way to go before fusion powers homes.
Nuclear fusion is described as the “holy grail” of energy production.

‘Is Anthropic the new Dr Frankenstein?’ | BBC News
AI Decoded speaks to leading tech podcaster Scott Galloway about the growing controversy surrounding Anthropic’s latest AI model, Claude Mythos.
During testing, the system uncovered thousands of hidden vulnerabilities in the software underpinning most of the world’s computers — prompting Anthropic to decide it was too dangerous to release.
The company says Mythos can outperform humans at certain hacking and cyber‑security tasks, raising fresh concerns among regulators, lawmakers and financial institutions about the risks to global digital infrastructure.
Also on the show, we reveal how US students are changing their majors at university in order to ‘AI proof’ their future careers and how nearly half of Gen Z would like to turn back the clock to the late 90’s before AI was even a thing.
Joining Christian Fraser is the BBC’s AI correspondent Marc Cieslak and AI Decoded co-host Priya Lakhani.

This clip is so reflective of all that's wrong with the media. An announcement about a major breakthrough in fusion, where the only valuable technical information is "it created more energy than it cost". This takes mere seconds to convey and we could have already assumed this much.
Then 9 whole minutes of political and corporate propaganda virtually unrelated, but forcibly associating itself with the success and patting itself on the back. Despite these developments being made through decades of many political environments and careers.
The sacrifice of journalistic integrity for corporate cash will slowly sacrifice viewership, the fundamental value proposition of your business that the cash is paying for. If only this process reached its conclusion faster. But I guess old habits die hard for many.

Lets cut through the verbsl gymnastics. We are trying to figure out how to release this, but first and foremost, is we are trying to figure out how to monetize it. This could be absolutely free to everyone. Our system for any scientific breakthroughs is broken. We are stuck in the past and with old money in charge we will never move forward

This sounds like a party political broadcast for the Biden administration as well. Also, what the hell does thus research have to do with diversity and inclusion. Why not just pick researchers who are both qualified and skilled in thus field. I swear these people will set back research decades because they hire based on ethnicity rather that the people who are most qualified. It's like a religion with them.

Most people missed the part: ''The fusion experiment produced more energy out than was input by the lasers' Just to be clear. Energy Input by the lasers = 2.05 MJ Energy output by the fusion = 3.15 MJ. The calculation did not consider the energy to run the lasers: So: Energy to run the lasers: 400 MJ. In fact, the real produced energy was less than 1% of the energy that was put in. Breakthrough yes. More energy out than in, No.
