Taste Testing Pretentious Ingredients Vol. 9 | Sorted Food

Published

on

There’s nothing wrong with being a little pretentious from time to time, especially when there’s food involved! But the real question is, are these food products worth ‘showing off’ with, or are they just style over substance?

In this episode, we taste and review a selection of ingredients to see if they’re worthy of your kitchen (and your cash!)

You can find out more about the ingredients we’ve reviewed in the links below. Just so you know, some of these are affiliate links, which means if you buy something from the store after clicking on them, the store will pay us a percentage of your basket… This doesn’t cost or change anything else for you!

Note: Madagascar/Bourbon Vanilla is the single most common form of vanilla in the world. Unless it specifies, any form of real vanilla you buy in the supermarket is probably Madagascar vanilla. So the fact that the Little Pod people felt they needed to put so much emphasis on that detail says to me that they don't have anything else to advertise. They're banking on you having no idea what you're looking at to shower you in bullshit. Pretentious.

Truffle salt… No, I would never buy that. Truffles have a very distinct flavour, and it doesn't go well with everything. If I want the umami then I'd save a lot of money just by buying a bag of msg. (I'm not a big fan of truffles to begin with.) I guess it would be fine in a mushroom risotto or, indeed, on a steak. But I don't really see a lot of applications for it.

I can appreciate the layered chocolate spread because i know pb & j jars that are segmented similarlly but vertically and i like that. The difference with this one is that u either finish a layer first or u mix the top 2 on ur bread. Which will probably go poorly for the layers in the jar as it seems reallllly loose.

I think making your own vinegar spritz is not pretentious. I have one, similar to vegetable oil spray, for putting on my fries, chips and some veggues.
Buying a vinegar spritz is pretentious.

Flavoured salt is pretentious. It smells nice only in the jar, it is expensive and at the end of the day you only use a pinch.

Seggiano has an artichoke spread like that and it is so incredible. It's just artichoke, garlic and olive oil but somehow has such a deep, cheesy favor.

Random comment: Why would you wear a "performance" shirt that has ribbing at the shoulders? That's an awful look. You look fine, mate, those wires look awful.
