Russia and Ukraine’s fight for the last streets of Bakhmut – BBC News
The battle for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has been the longest and bloodiest of this war so far.
Western officials estimate between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded here, while Ukraine’s military has also paid a heavy price – and it still isn’t over.
Russia has been trying to capture Bakhmut for months, and it’s been a testament – so far – to Ukraine’s determination not to give ground.

Saudi Arabia says Yemen’s Houthis will face ‘consequences’ after series of deadly attacks | BBC News
Saudi Arabia has said the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen will face “consequences” after a series of deadly attacks on Riyadh’s airport and other sites across the country.
Meanwhile, Houthi media reported an oil facility in the Yemeni capital Sanaa has been hit by Saudi-coalition forces.
And the head of MI5 said Iran is expanding a hybrid campaign in the UK, targeting Jewish communities and military bases.
Elsewhere, the International Monetary Fund said the global economy has dealt with the impacts of war in Iran better than expected, but warns that countries are running out of flexibility to tackle rising prices.

At least 33 children and one teacher have been killed after a school roof collapsed in Pakistan, with hospitals saying the large majority are children under the age of 13.
Police have arrested the owner of the school and the structure of the building is being investigated.
Emergency services rushed to the private Al-Khair school in the Dir Colony neighbourhood from after 08:48 local time (04:48 BST).
Rescue workers and residents searched the rubble for hours, looking for more children who could be trapped.
In a statement, the office of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari says “this heart-wrenching tragedy has plunged the entire nation into shock”.

A diplomat’s job is traditionally to represent their country’s interests while maintaining good relations with their host nation. But some of Donald Trump’s ambassadors are taking a different approach.
On Tuesday, Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned from her ambassadorship in Greece after serious allegations were raised about her conduct. According to reporting by the Wall Street Journal, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr. allegedly asked a Trump donor to pay off her $100,000 Amex bill — allegations she denies.
Guilfoyle is not the only ambassador to have caused a stir. US envoys around the world have sparked diplomatic rows, controversy and, in some cases, appeared to step beyond the traditional boundaries of their role.

Katie Zacharia is “transitioning out” of her role as White House press secretary, the White House has confirmed to the BBC.
They did not provide a timeline for when she would be leaving the position.
US President Donald Trump earlier said he told Zacharia to “reconsider” her role.
He said he told her, “You don’t have to do this”, after her debut in the briefing room earlier this week.
Zacharia has been treated “very, very badly” by the media in recent days, Trump told reporters outside the White House.

There are reasons why we aren't providing long range missile systems and aircraft – to prevent nuclear holocaust. I'm routing for Ukraine butI am sick of people shaming the US over not providing enough. How about say thank you? Show a little gratitude? Ukraine would be a Russian state right now were it not for us. We have overwheling poverty, a lack of affordable healthcare, a lousy education system, and yet every other week were giving a billion dollars of our hard earned tax money to Ukraine. Our tax money is providing all virtually all you're telling us isn't enough. This is just one more European mess we have to clean up because why? Russia is not invading us. In fact, we risk nuclear attack because we're arming Ukraine, giving military intelligence, and training Ukranians to fight.
