Flood-hit Auckland, New Zealand suffers more heavy rain – BBC News
More heavy rainfall has brought havoc to the New Zealand city of Auckland, downing trees, flooding homes and closing major roads.
Weather watchers said more than a month of rain had fallen in 24 hours, affecting roads and rail, as the region reels from deadly floods last week.
Four people were killed and thousands of homes were damaged by the heavy downpours on Friday. Residents in vulnerable areas had been told to prepare to evacuate if needed.

Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma says the gaming giant needs to be “thinking about” affordability for its next-generation console, amid a “crisis” in computing prices.
Speaking exclusively to the BBC’s Laura Cress at Gamescom in Cologne, she said rising hardware costs partly driven by AI spending mean firms need to find ways to make gaming affordable.
She also revealed gamers will soon be able to get digital versions of many of the physical games they currently own, potentially meaning their old games can be played on future Xbox consoles without having to put a disc in a drive.

A 23-year-old Utah man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – as a judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty at trial.
Tyler Robinson denies aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and six other charges in connection with the shooting of Kirk at a campus event on 10 September 2025.
Defence lawyers had tried to have the death penalty taken off the table, but prosecutors argued that aggravating factors, such as firing into a crowd in the presence of children, warranted a capital trial.
Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Hundreds of people have become ill with salmonella linked to imported eggs, say UK authorities, who say they have identified two new clusters of the infection.
Some of the cases date back a year, but all involve bacteria that are almost genetically identical, suggesting a common food source.

Apple has renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on its Maps app, after an order from US President Donald Trump.
It’s all part of Washington’s trade row with Canada.
The change was made for US-based users – those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario displayed. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment.

Interesting that the BBC interviews 'Community leader' Efeso Collins and NOT the Mayor, Wayne Brown. Mr Collins (Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party endorsed candidate) lost the Auckland mayoralty race in 2022l to Mr Brown (Independent). Mr Collins speaks calmly about the 'leadership vacuum' at the beginning of the crisis….He's referring to the initial invisibility of Mayor Brown and his appalling use of words .."my role is not to rush out with buckets………."
