As Ukraine prepares for a much anticipated counter-offensive against Russian forces, BBC Analysis Editor Ros Atkins looks at the challenges facing Russia’s military.
Since Russia’s President Vladimir Putin began the invasion of Ukraine, thousands of civilians and combatants have been killed or injured, cities and towns have been destroyed in fighting, and nearly 8.2 million Ukrainians have been registered as refugees in Europe, with 2.8 million of them in Russia.
In the past few days, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been on a European tour, in which he has been promised several billion dollars’ worth of military equipment by Western allies, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Emmanuel Macron of France.

A Kenyan judge has started to deliver a verdict in a mass murder case involving doomsday preacher Paul Mackenzie.
Mackenzie and 29 of his followers are being charged with the murder of 191 people, all but one of them children.
His cult is alleged to have forced children to starve to death so that they could “meet Jesus”.
Mackenzie and the 29 others have all pleaded not guilty to murder, repeatedly insisting that nobody was forced to die.

America’s pain at the pump could have major implications for the future of the war in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump wants to bring down fuel prices for Americans. One way he’s trying to do it is by reopening the door to Russian energy, reversing a policy designed to deprive Russian President Vladimir Putin of money for his war in Ukraine.
The shift comes as relations between Trump and Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky have deteriorated dramatically. Trump has blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries for contributing to the global diesel shortage, while Ukraine says those refineries are a crucial source of revenue for Russia’s war machine.
So, is American angst about fuel prices changing Trump’s approach to the war? And would importing Russian diesel even make a meaningful difference to US prices?

Yemen’s Houthis have warned aviation firms and passengers against using Saudi airports and airspace, after 12 people were killed in an attack on the international airport in Riyadh.
More than 300 were injured in Saturday’s attack on King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi statement on Sunday did not directly refer to Saturday’s attack, but previously did say they were behind separate strikes on the same airport on Thursday.
Four Saudis, two people from Bangladesh and one person each from the US, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt were killed, the Saudi civil aviation authority said.

Police in London need to move away from criminalising women involved in street sex work in the wake of the disastrous murder case of Simon Levy, officers have told the BBC.
Levy, a convicted sex offender, was left to kill two women and rape another – all of whom were vulnerable and sometimes engaged in street sex work – due to a series of failings, including by the Metropolitan Police.
The BBC was given access to the Met’s new two-officer female team in north London, created in a bid to engage with street sex workers, improve trust, and encourage them to report crimes committed against them.
The team described hearing about endemic levels of male violence against the women they have met.

The BBC uses sinister intimidatory tactics via the agency it uses to collect unpaid BBC tax (the BBC licence fee), in order to force unwilling people to pay for (inter alia) its pro-Ukraine war, stance and suppression of suggestions of peace negotiations to end the conflict; its pro-WEF restriction of what should should be inalienable liberties of the individual (the BBC’s twisted biased one-sided ‘Covid’ propaganda which ignored eminent virologists, immunologists and epidemiologists who disagreed with lockdown oppression and people being coerced into receiving novel medical treatment against their will; its unquestionably politically-biased coverage of everything it reports on; it’s significant role in what will be the destruction of the NHS through sheer weight of patient numbers, encouraged by the BBC’s pro-mass-illegal and uncontrolled immigration of undocumented (mostly economic) migrants from a safe place in continental Europe; its ignoring of serious issues around transgenderism including children undergoing mutilating surgical procedures at a young age; etc etc etc

I think the general idea is the US wants to cut-off China and Russia from the Middle East and Africa. The key is invading and controlling Iran. Since Iran cannot be invaded through waterways to its South, the US wishes to create a landroute from the waterways next to Syria, which is doable given US control/invasion of Iraq. Ukraine is just being used as an avenue to move Russian forces away from Syria. And, Russia will likely do so given they feel their homeland is at stake.
