What issues is Russia facing in Ukraine war? – BBC News
As Ukraine prepares for a much anticipated counter-offensive against Russian forces, BBC Analysis Editor Ros Atkins looks at the challenges facing Russia’s military.
Since Russia’s President Vladimir Putin began the invasion of Ukraine, thousands of civilians and combatants have been killed or injured, cities and towns have been destroyed in fighting, and nearly 8.2 million Ukrainians have been registered as refugees in Europe, with 2.8 million of them in Russia.
In the past few days, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been on a European tour, in which he has been promised several billion dollars’ worth of military equipment by Western allies, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Emmanuel Macron of France.

A 23-year-old Utah man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – as a judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty at trial.
Tyler Robinson denies aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and six other charges in connection with the shooting of Kirk at a campus event on 10 September 2025.
Defence lawyers had tried to have the death penalty taken off the table, but prosecutors argued that aggravating factors, such as firing into a crowd in the presence of children, warranted a capital trial.
Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Hundreds of people have become ill with salmonella linked to imported eggs, say UK authorities, who say they have identified two new clusters of the infection.
Some of the cases date back a year, but all involve bacteria that are almost genetically identical, suggesting a common food source.

Apple has renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on its Maps app, after an order from US President Donald Trump.
It’s all part of Washington’s trade row with Canada.
The change was made for US-based users – those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario displayed. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment.

Iran has launched missile and drone attacks at US targets across the Middle East, after American forces resumed strikes against Iran.
It comes after the Iranian Red Crescent said four people – including a child – were killed at a wedding celebration when shrapnel from a US missile hit a house in southern Iran.
Iranian media initially said five people had been killed.
The US military says it is aware of the reports but that it never targets civilians, and was striking Iranian targets in response to “recent attempted” Iranian attacks.

I think the general idea is the US wants to cut-off China and Russia from the Middle East and Africa. The key is invading and controlling Iran. Since Iran cannot be invaded through waterways to its South, the US wishes to create a landroute from the waterways next to Syria, which is doable given US control/invasion of Iraq. Ukraine is just being used as an avenue to move Russian forces away from Syria. And, Russia will likely do so given they feel their homeland is at stake.
