Where I live in Germany (upper franconia) there's a brand called Pema that makes many lebkuchen varieties, with gin, or contreau, whiskey, pina colada, and many more. Great stuff.

Maybe I will actually make lebkuchen this year. I will probably make fairy gingerbread, which is a special favorite, but a bit challenging to make.

I like lebkuchen (a friend sends some homemade ones cut in diamonds). Need to learn to make it. I've made pfefferneuse before, but grinding almonds was a pain.

I don't normally eat cold cereal for breakfast, but really like Weetabix (which are hard to find in the U.S.)

"Lebkuchen" is NOT "lebkushen." The "ch" is pronounced like "Bach" or "loch." LABE-koo-hun (with just a hint of c before the h). Also, good choice on the buy/DIY– lebkuchen takes about 3 days to make (it needs to rest a long time for the flavors to come together), and stollen is basically a sweet yeast bread with a lot of extras in it.

A story for you Jamie – since your "Christmas is all about cheeses" was passed over. Some of my mum's friends lived on a road in our town (rural but not small Australian city), where every year every house on the street went 300% on Christmas lights. They blocked off the street each year and there would be lines of people to see it. But My mum's friends moved in right at the end of the street, and hadn't known about the Christmas lights before they moved in. Come Christmas they were told they HAD to decorate. Now, this was when solar lights weren't really a thing here yet, and they were all quite expensive. So it was actually a pretty expensive ask. … So instead, they bought a bunch of Babybel cheeses and hung them along their rafters. … because they were decorating with little baby cheeses.

The Germans do everything right, a German Oktoberfest is a common bucket list item inspired to the ‘discount’ versions most other nations provide, German Christmas market food iconic in most town centres in winter as a mainstay because their products are a different level, have the cultural authenticity behind them and are worth every penny, and to top it all off they’re one of, if not the most, efficient workforces globally. Germany is the perfect example of a country run right, each cog in the oiled German machine operates smoothly, all interconnected and putting most of the world to shame with the standards they have set and improve upon. The workforce produce the same output in GDP in 4 working days that the UK does in 5 days, such a wonderful country with a rich history and delicately perfected culture and public image, definitely on the travel list to be able to absorb the German culture and marvel in appreciation for its superiority over England. This has turned into an essay which I find most of my comments on Sorted videos seem to turn into so again I’m apologising for waffling on yet again, but Germany is such a fantastic and fascinating country who never fail to amaze from the outside, I’d love to hear about anyone’s experiences of their travels to Germany and what it’s actually like to live there if any German us reading this!

11:33 Jamie, did you say "Christmas is all about cheeses" or "Cheesus," a portmanteau of Jesus and Cheese?

December 22, 2023 at 10:39 am
so nice seeing you guys appreciate german christmas treats, they can be a nostalgic feast on its own, there are so many more staples on a christmas market, maybe you could try them too, living near one we smell them everyday right now and it doesn't get old for example Mutzen, Baumstriezel, Langos and the the classic caramelized and spiced Almonds don't taste anywhere as good as on the Weihnachtsmarkt🥰

I normally add orange zest to my mince pie pastry and the filling, which I also add some cranberries too. Tempted to add some rum this year. I made stollen about 18 years ago, all four of the grew so large they hardly fitted on the tray!
