TikToker trapped in gambling addiction that nearly destroyed his life – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

Following multiple delays, the UK government’s new review on gambling is expected to be released later this week, amid mounting concerns about gambling’s harm on people’s finances and mental health.

The industry has dramatically changed since the Gambling Act was brought in, in 2005 – most significantly the booming online market, driven by the ubiquity of smartphones.

Clinicians and charities say users have been failed by the lack of regulation. One of those is 27-year-old Lewis who has lost £100,000 to gambling, relapsed 12 times, and at his lowest point contemplated suicide.

Newsnight’s Anna Collinson met with him.

I once won 20 lacs (2 million INR), I was shocked and happy. It was late in night, everyone in my family were sleeping whilst I just continued to play, I only withdrew 5 lacs (500k INR) and kept playing with rest with way higher bets in a hope ro win even more, but instead I lost EVERYTHING in few hours, and even cancelled the withdrawal i made for and deposited even more and lost everything 😢

I still gamble and gamble and this has made me even worse, I keep wagering all of it even when i have won big money, I never stop until I loose everything, I don't know how I can stop. I have tried few times before, but I cant help it. Nothing has helped, despite full support from my family. I broke their trust so many times and continue to gamble all i get each month from the work. I sometimes feel like ending my life, my i am too coward to do that! I have lost not only thr money, but the respect of my family. I just wished I was able to stop, but i can't 😞

A responsible government would ban these gambling dens off our streets, yes, blood money (Tax) is all the chancellor(s) care about but it's not good enough as victims such as those on benefits are among those who risk living on next to nothing turning to stealing and petty crime to survive & also the employed are getting fleeced out of their hard earned. Bookmakers are a dangerous menace & all should be closed down including all the on-line firms just only allow bets on the racecourses/Greyhounds.

I have lost about 100k USD. over the years of gambling. Then it dawned on me that nobody ever getting rich gambling all their life. Maybe only a few pro poker players. I quitted because it consumed all my free time. I wish to undo it but I can't. I felt better when I considered it was a failed busses venture. Lesson learned the hard way. I stay away from gambling ever since. Good luck everyone to find your way out.

I wouldn't say I was addicted compared to how some others are. Ie, I've never borrowed from any method to gamble, but have wasted alot of money.

I logged into the only 2 gambling sites I even trusted and locked the accounts for 1 year. There is no way to get around that lock at all.

If you are addicted to the online part of gambling and want to stop, self suspend for as long as you can.

I love gambling. I makes sports fun for me. But I never gamble what I can’t afford to lose. I understand how people can get addicted and lose control.. it takes discipline. If I lose too much I make sure to take a long break

Get rid of bookies and online. Gambling is awful. You wouldn’t walk into a pub and spend £300 in a day or blow £100’s on drugs in a day. Pure scum and so are the majority of people that work in them.

The legal advisers helping migrants pretend to be gay to stay in the UK | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Today, an undercover BBC investigation has found evidence of law firms and legal advisors helping migrants pretend to be gay to get asylum.

Migrants were advised to take staged photos at nightclubs, attend LGBT events and to go to GPs pretending to be depressed to obtain medical evidence to support their cases.

Adam and Chris are joined by BBC politics investigation correspondent Billy Kenber, who uncovered the story. In response to our findings, the Home Office said: “Anyone found trying to exploit the system will face the full force of the law, including removal from the UK.”

Plus, Adam also checks in with Faisal, who’s in the US at the IMF’s annual conference. He fills us in on the indirect war of words between Rachel Reeves and her US counterpart, Scott Bessent.

I watched Hungary’s 16-year Viktor Orbán era crumble | BBC News

Published

on

Hungary has seen a historic election result. After 16 years in power, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been ousted from the role.

Péter Magyar’s Tisza party won a comfortable “super majority” with two-thirds of the seats in parliament, meaning the party will be able to change the constitution.

The defeat will mean a huge reset of Hungary’s relationships with the rest of the world.

Orbán has been a close partner of both US President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and he had become a big thorn in the side of the EU and Ukraine.

The BBC’s Europe Editor Katya Adler was in Budapest as the election unfolded, and takes you with her in this video as a historic defeat takes place.

Americans react to President Donald Trump’s feud with Pope Leo XIV | BBC News

Published

on

Americans are reacting to President Donald Trump’s escalating feud with Pope Leo XIV and the backlash surrounding an AI-generated image depicting the president as a Jesus-like figure, which has since been deleted.

On Monday, Trump posted a lengthy Truth Social message attacking the pontiff, who has been a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operations in Iran.

He criticised the Pope, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy”.

The Pope said on Monday that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration or “speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do”.
