If we dive deeper into his policies and look more critically at how he has acted in Number 10, it becomes obvious that Sunak may well be the most right wing Prime Minister this country has had since Margaret Thatcher.

Personally, I think Sunak's immigrant background rather helps his right-wing policies. If you're going to pursue right-wing policies, especially when it comes to conservative social values, the left is much less inclined to call you a racist/sexist/lgbt-phobe when you're a minority. So he can push those issues with more aplomb.

The migration policy is quite unfair, to put it mildly. It’s inhumane to treat asylum seekers in such a way- the integration of immigrants within the society significantly depends on how they are treated: like humans or subhumans.

And what is bad about being right wing?

  8. @stepanotrisal1512

As bad as it will be for Britain, it might be for the better that Torys will get a beatdown. They really need to be whipped awake. Cameron and the whatshername after him were awful, Johnson looked promising, before he turned UK into a prison colony, and ever since him, it's even worse. Is this all just an elaborate plan to fix the energy crisis with Thatcher's spinning body?

  23. @sandrafoxley735

    December 19, 2023 at 8:46 am

sunak the great unelected, non leader and loser this country has ever had – he got us into this mess as chancellor, borrowed half a trillion and wasted it, hiked taxes, done absolutely nothing for the British people except put up cost of living and taking even more tax from the peoples pockets – but if you are an illegal you get put up in hotels with food and heating and don't pay a penny – he hasn't a clue, makes promises then forgets about them while rewording the old ones into new ones – he and his supporters are not conservative but more like pinko communists who have taken over and ruined the country and its people…………

    December 19, 2023 at 8:46 am

As much as I dislike "call me Dave, which footie team do I support?" Cameron, I miss those days….

  25. @ForwardSynthesis

    December 19, 2023 at 8:46 am

Most of these things are just him undoing or not fulfilling previous changes that by any reasonable standard would be judged as left wing, despite being proposed and put into place by the Conservatives. So if anything, you could say he's marginally returned to conservatism, given the Overton window has shifted so much that gay marriage and net zero have become part of what his party supports. Even then, your example isn't him undoing gay marriage, but preventing a radical change to self-ID concerning transgenderism, so again this isn't backsliding, but simply preventing a progressive aligned agenda from being fulfilled. He's the most right wing PM since Thatcher only because his predecessors started leaning to the left in line with David Cameron's approach.

Ironically, the one place that isn't true is with regard to the economics Thatcher was renowned/hated for; David Cameron's austerity was to the right of Sunak's soft-keynesian thinking, which was also the major difference between him and Truss.

  26. @BlueLiberty20

    December 19, 2023 at 8:46 am

I am really struggling to understand what makes someone more right wing. Is it ultra capitalism? Is it social conservatism? Is it civil libertarianism? Every source of information is too vague.
