Tren Maya: Mexico’s Yucatán railway project ‘horrifies’ environmentalists – BBC News
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is unveiling a new multi-billion-dollar rail network called the ‘Tren Maya’.
The network will stretch for 1,500km (930 miles) and it is expected to bring two million more tourists a year to the impoverished Yucatán Peninsula.
But it has run massively over budget and critics have said it’s an environmental catastrophe.

Seven people have died after a passenger boat capsized near northern Cyprus.
Search and rescue operations are under way to find 23 people missing, said Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
He says 267 people were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 237 have been rescued.
The boat left from the northern Cypriot port of Kyrenia at 11:58 local time (09:58 BST) and officials said it capsized around four nautical miles into its journey to Turkey.

Ukraine’s progress against Russian forces in its southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia has been far more limited than its successes in the north-east.
Both sides come under regular fire as they rely heavily on artillery to push forward.
The crackdown on people who do not support Russian rule in occupied areas is rising, with soldiers going door-to-door to check on who lives in each house and whether they could be drafted into fighting for Russia.

The government has said it will exercise “extreme caution” over lifting the lockdown. Ministers stress it will be a gradual process, not a single leap to freedom. It comes as the Prime Minister prepares to address the nation, to set out the next phase in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile major airlines have called for clarity after being told that the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK, from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland.
The transport secretary Grant Shapps has called on people to walk and cycle to work, once the lockdown restrictions are eased in England. He said it was a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform the way people get around.
Senior clerics are urging the government to act cautiously before allowing places of worship to reopen. All churches, mosques, synagogues and temples closed their doors almost two months ago.

What makes environmentalist and the private sector mad, is that the Mexican government under AMLO is working for the citizens not for the corporations anymore. All of our tax money is going to infrastructure, pensions, health, pay debts, military, sports, etc.
In the past with the corrupted political parties of { PRI, PAN, PRD, MC} the politicians from these political parties collect all the tax money every year and send it to their own personal accounts. That's why it was no money on our country from (1957-2018).
Now with these new regime under AMLO with MORENA, PT, VE is the opposite. Our tax money is working for the citizens🎉🎉🎉🎉

the western media and BBC narrative on such projects is always negative and its like they don't want countries to develop such projects. the same narrative was also on the recently completed Malaysia high speed railway project.

I thought BBC was objective…… but not . The only concern we have in the Riviera Maya is the miners from USA and Canada (CALICA) they are the bigest concern! Look up over the internet the devastation they have done in only in a few years taking advantage of the past corrupted politicians!! . The rail transport is more efficient per pasenger than any other locomotive means, apart from that there is almos 2 or more kilometers of overhead rail tracks whenever it encouters a Cenote or waterbody, it is full hybrid uses electricity and can shift to diesel whenever is nèeded, moreover the rail road is the existent old road that has been refurbished, it was built with (fauna-pass) tunnels and bridges, etc, etc,etc!! Back in the 80's expresident of Mexico Ernesto Cedillo sold the former Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico and passenger train was finished leaving cargo train only, then they build new car roads and bought passenger busses with private money and today there are toll boots all over the country making car road trips very expensive! and PLEASE dont take Eugenio Derbez ( pseudo comediant and now pseudo enviromentalist ) so serious! I am not sponsored by the goverment by writing this comment it is only because I am happy passenger train is back like in the UK! Saludos desde Mexico.

As a Mexican I can Tell you that this is the worst and most stupid project ever and it was very expensive . I feel ashamed , Billions of dollars spent to devaste the Jungle for a train that has no need to be , that the locals can´t afford and they payed for it , that doesn´t take you anywhere in particular and no tourists are going to visit it because it is not attractive at all and will be a symbol of Ecoside and destruction for many decades to come , nobody wants to go to see the landscape in Campeche . Also the soil in Most of the Penninsula is very Carstic and unstable so the tracks run on top of many caves filled with water , the risk of an accident is very high and the pollution of the whole aquypher is now unstoppable. The 5th and 6th parts of the line run trough the virgin mayan jungle and is already been ravaged but will never run , its is in the direct path of hurricanes and just cuts a massive line trough the wildlife´s habitat ( with big animals like Jaguars and wild boars crossing it ) I believe it was only done because it was the childhood wet dream idea of President Andres Lopez Obrador, No economic Viability or Ecological studies were ever presented , they even covered many mayan archeological sites to make way for the train and put the army to build it at gun point and now that the world knows of the Jungle devastation I hope to see a complete boycot and the matter resolved in the I.C.C. Ecoside is a very serious crime against mother nature. It´s the product of a very sick and desperate mind.

No surprise that western media turn against a left-wing government and its projects when the interests of their corporate masters are at stake.
You all can criticize all you want but in the end, whatever impact the Mayan train will have on the environment is dwarfed by…. Say, the massive environmental disaster caused by Canadian mining companies on Mexican soil.
You could report on that too, unless your masters won't allow it.
