Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam: Will it Mean War with Egypt? – TLDR News
Opinionated Episode One: https://youtu.be/I7pKNPXmS-c
Watch the Whole Season: https://tldrnews.co.uk/opinionated/
It might not seem major global news that Ethiopia is currently building a dam across the Nile, a dam they hope will solve the country’s issue relating to water, electricity supply, and trade. The issue is that neighbouring countries aren’t happy, most notably downstream Egypt. Despite attempts at mediation from the US, talks have collapsed and some speculate that things could turn nasty with threats to bomb the dam. In this video, we discuss what’s happening and the implications on the world.

Also you did a lot of wrongs here, 1. You used al Jazeera as reference
2. We offered to build power plants that will produce much more energy, if they slow down the filling.
3. Only time we threatened was when mursi, the most stupid president in the world, was our president, and el fattah el sis I never threatened to bomb it.

Egypt has 1 river that if it ceases to exist, Egypt will also cease to exist. Ethiopia has NINE rivers and gets rain, while Egypt barely gets any rain. i think it's fair to see who needs the river the most here.
@zerihunwoldeyes2980
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
Ethiopia doesn't block the water from reaching Egypt, but want to build a dam for electricity. Ethiopia want to fill the dam during the rainy season where surplus water flow.
@menaghtas
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
This is a misleading video, because Ethiopia has 11 river other than the blue Nile to get a fresh water from with a capacity of 122 billion m3 of water other than the ground water capacity, Ethiopia had the chance to choose another location for the dam which allow Ethiopia to generate electricity with small reservoir behind the dam, unlike the GERD which has large amount of water threaten the life of 20 million people in Sudan if their is a problem in constructing the dam or allow a counter country like Israel to threat Egypt by destroying a dam which has the effect of 50 atomic bombs.
@domingo2977
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
I think they should donate a desalination water filter to Egypt for their water system to be developed
@ahmedaliabudorrah4901
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
i am Egyptian and we love the Ethiopian people and we have no issues with them at all . I don’t hope for a war with Ethiopian only for the Water issue, I hope we solve this problem. There are many countries who support war to get benefits , but we don’t want this. All this for the sake of Africa ❤️and war that Ethiopia want to start at the end of the day will not solve anything to both of us. Without the Nile there will be no life in Egypt so it’s life or death for us while for Ethiopia it’s economic growth can be done with many ways. What Egypt is asking for is to give us time and arrangement before Ethiopian fill her dam so we can prepare and maintain our water levels. and both of us will be happy but Ethiopia don't want to respect the people values and life's If Ethiopia was in our shoes it will say the same thing. 🇪🇬🦅🙏

Ethiopia has 11 rivers to build a dam upon. Egypt only has one river that means life for 100million Egyptians. Ethiopia could build this dam upon another river so that not to harm Egypt . Long live My Beloved Egypt ✌️💕
@abdosoliman
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
There a solution as an Egyptian I recognize Ethiopian need power to live I can't live without it.
However, Ethiopian administration doesn't sound like reasonable people. To put it simple any nation wide change can't just happen over 5 years it's not practical and will result in disasters. 10 years may be a reasonable amount of time to fix irrigation issues or substitute them. Losing farm land in Egypt is not an option. We simply can't live without it.
So far Ethiopia admiration as far as I know negotiate then back off from signing a treaty for operations. Now why would they do that?
We are not the only countries sharing a river and a lot of counties no one is making such a big deal out of it. The problem is not the dam itself it's the filling time we need a reasonable filling time so Egypt and Sudan doesn't become more desserts than they already are.
Egypt government have taken steps to reduce our reliance on the Nile so far we have built 14 sea water desalination plants which should cover the needs of up to 28 Million people. Still as you may have thought it's not enough. And it won't be feasible to just lose from 20% to 33% of the Nile water suddenly. A reasonable agreement between the 3 counties should be made or God knows what could happen you can't predict or control anybody's actions in such conflicts blow up is the dam can be as harmful for us as for them it a crazy plan for a conflict that could be solved by reaching mutual agreement.

Egypt can finish Ethiopia in one week
@omarselim9189
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
You intentionally didn't mention how much water Ethiopia has on its territory every year. So let me correct this misleading video. They get around 1080 billions of cubic meters of rain fall much more then they need so the water quota isn't relevant for Ethiopia. The issues is that since that the Nile is egypt only water source they must cooperate regarding the use of the water with their neighbours with good will. The choice for the size of the dam and location is the worst for upstream countries.
@wishkahzyricks
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
2:57 "This might've made some sense back then, as Egypt and Sudan were by far the biggest countries"
No, it might have not, because they were not. In 1959, when Egypt and Sudan reached the new agreement, Egypt's population was 26 million, Sudan's was 7,3 million, and Ethiopia's was 21 million. This proportion is not that different from their current populations.
Jumping to such unfounded conclusions reveals the kind of arrogance you have demonstrated in your other videos about Africa. Typos and mistakes are common in these, and particularly in this video you have even let them plague one of your trademarks — countries with legs. You have omitted the whole Sinai Peninsula from the territory of Egypt cutout.
And no, I'm not sorry for necroposting, because I was brought to this video by a link under a new one about Ethiopia — or 'Ethopia', as you've called it for about half a minute of screen time.
I really like your videos when they're well researched, and I understand my tone may seem rather scathing, but I can't help but get the impression you don't really care that much about being spot-on and that's really disappointing.
@darvish19
January 6, 2024 at 11:26 am
Get your info right: Ethiopia has 12 river basins with an annual runoff volume of 122 billion m3 of water and an estimated 2.6 – 6.5 billion m3 of ground water potential. This corresponds to an average of 1,575 m3 of physically available water per person per year, a relatively large volume.
