There were plenty of white Christians manacled on the French Galleys before the Revolution. John Knox the Scottish reformer was a French galley slave for a while. John Newton, who was a slave trader was once a slave to someone who was also a slave. But Newton repented and later wrote that hymn, Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.

There will seem an inappropriate element in my comment BUT the class system in Great Britainn until the 1960s was social racism for working class citizens, but especially so for those rent paying Council house dwellers or 'Council House Scum' as we were referred to by some, not all, middle class locals. Putting one's address on job applications could sink any chance of an interview.
