To Paraphrease, the oil exec said "If the public think that recycling works, they'll be less concerned about the environment"

Millions of tons of toilet paper is flushed away every day.
We should collect it for recycling.
It could be used to make many items such as paper plates, drinking cups and straws.
They could be dyed brown to hide any leftover impurities.

Much like any other problem relating to general populace this recycling is mostly just about making the people feel better, you want meaningful change step on throat of industries – they crap out so much pollution, waste and other crap that it makes any contribution some random individual dose completely meaningless.

I thought it was common knowledge that almost no plastic is actually recycled you put in the recyclinhg bin and just ends up in landfil in china, and its nothing but a placebo scam.

Up to the 70s cars used to stripped out ,but then the price of metal went up so a crusher was made and you could an entire car in wheels .interior engine ,gearbox the lot push a button and a cube came out the other end ,and then send it to China where it was melted down for the metal of course the pollution was disgusting ,so good carbon foot print for the scrapyard !

UK plastics and old fridges /freezers & E waste turn up in Asia & Africa so why is this ?
Its because there is a phoney export scheme to dump waste under the heading of recycle
Anything exported has to have an end user certificate and these are just waved through no questions .
UK exports millions of tons of rubbish to Sweden via ship ,they burn it in their waste to energy incinerators .
We are now seeing smaller waste to energy incinerators popping up all over the UK ,just not in the posh areas ,its all to do with land fill quotas and taking the weight off the councils !

As a kid it was my chores to ‘sort out the recycling’ where I lived I had to separate cardboard, plastic, metals (tins etc), glass and put them in their designated boxes so they could be picked up by the council. I did this for over 10 years. Then panorama showed that all my chores were just being dumped on beaches in poor countries.
I gave up at that point and felt scammed.

Why aren't we using glasses like borosilicate as containers. They're easy to clean, tough, break safe, dishwasher safe and microwave safe. We need a system where customers can bring in their own reusable containers and pay for exactly what they want.

Very interesting. I think we’re in a position where we, consumers, don’t have much choice about how much plastic waste we produce. There are very very few products that let you buy a refill packet. And items that come in cardboard tend to use cardboard that can’t even be recycled

Why instead of banning single use plastics which is completely undoable and unreasonable unless you want an elitist society, we dont force single use plastics to be made of plastics that are biodegradable in the short term. E.g a plastic that biodegrades in 6 months, that is already more than a huge amount of products shelve life time

Recycling is often a misnomer: e.g. Tetra Briks are 'recycled' but new Tetra Briks are not made from recycled ones.
'Cycle' in 'recycle' implies a closed loop, but that's obviously not the case.

Bit of a missed point here: Not all plastic is the same. Its a lot more compicated than the hyperbolic language used by Boris or recycling enthusiasts.
Ultimately, plastic is here to stay. Its just that useful of a material, and we really don't have an alternative atm, that can wholesale replace it all.
I think Boris knows this though, which is what hes getting at. Its just his way of saying it is not really helpful, and just makes the public confused.
