I've always thought the argument that privatisation creates competition (which is good for consumers) was absolutely absurd when it came to the railways.
True competition is being able to choose where you buy a car from, or which broadband provider or mobile phone operator you use, but as said in the video the reality is you only have a choice of one operator when it comes to rail, but in addition to that if you are relying on the train for commuting to work, you are more than likely limited to one train at a specific time, never mind one operator!
Full re-nationalisation gets my vote.

The same system of tendering should continue but with longer contracts, the short contracts do not give the rail franchise owners enough time and return on investment to make it worthwhile investing in the first place. But the thing is, Network Rail who own the infrastructure such as the rails and signals and many stations cause most of the delays and cancellations and the rail franchise owners are blamed for Network rails failings simply because the customers only come in to contact of the brand name such as Southeastern. Talking of Southeastern which is being run by the government, the service has got worse and the trains are always dirty since Go Ahead/Govia was removed. Previously Southeastern had an army of cleaners even before COVID. Now when you use the toilets on the trains there's either no water to wash your hands or no soap and no tissue or the toilets are out of order. So I have no faith in a nationalised system. Also British rail under public ownership was pretty awful, people forget how bad the truly nationalised system was.

South Eastern Rail is a perfect example where ZERO investment was made; low-quality service provided, never upgraded or updated trains, etc. Thameslink is still not very reliable, but they updated all the trains.
This government proposal will just make sure that companies are paid regardless of the passenger numbers.

Either completely privatise it or nationalise it completely. Don't stop it halfway.
Privatisation has worked wonders for Japan.
And nationalisation has worked brilliantly for continental Europe.

The only real thing being altered is that Network Rail is being renamed. The weird thing I find is that their will be no Midland Region as this is being run under the Eastern Division.
For instance St Pancras will be under two divisions, Eastern (Midland Mainline) and Southern (HS1)

I’m a free market advocate but the problem with rail operators is that it always forms geographic monopolies. They don’t need to improve because new operators cannot challenge them. The barrier of entry is too high and it’s not like you can build multiple lines in exactly the same place. Some industries cannot be free markets because the industry naturally stifles competition

Look at Taiwan. The problem they got with the massive tradegy happened in April 2021 is that the railway is nationalised and workers and management weren't up to a good standard
I don't know if nationalising UK train network would mean the same.

Privatisation means higher competition which ultimately should result in cheaper prices and better service to the consumers. Interestingly the very opposite happened when the UK privatised the rail network some decades ago. Train prices are today outrageously high in the UK, flexibility and ease of use is non-existing, and problems with time tables and punctuality have more been the norm that the opposite. I normally favour and support privatisation however not when it comes to trains,. The current UK train concession model does not and will never work, it is too fragmented, there is no competition (once concession has been given) and without proper regulation in place you end up with the highest train ticket prices in Europe.

As someone who is heavily in favour of privatisation, I think that the whole designated area that train companies can operate in idea, should be scraped; so that actual market forces can bring down the cost of train fairs and so competition can create a better rail service.
The system we have now is woefully wrong and takes all the worst aspects from a fully nationalised rail service and a fully privatized system, it's a terrible compromise. Without proper competition what is incentivising these rail companies to bring down rail fairs?

I think the only long term solution is to fully privatise the system including the tracks and network. Let the consumer put the pressure on private companies to invest in their network. As for competition, while this will be limited with trains, as companies will own infrastructure and perhaps establish a monopoly, road networks and airports will be their real competition.

The last time the UK had a good management & system was under the 'Big Four' before the Railways were Nationalised in 1948. After the Tories won the 1951 Election they used this to sabotage the Railways & sell off all its profitable parts even including the Road Services the Railways had to link up areas not covered by Rail directly from the Rail Heads. 'The Big Four' itself was a cooperation between four Railway area companies and the Government'. This was set up in 1924 after the myriad private companies kept having myriad crashes. And it worked. During the War the Railways ran troop trains and Government goods for free that was never paid back–in other words, theft. At the same time the Railways were worked so hard they had many problems in the lines, the Engines, the signalling–everything. There was an agreement at Nationalisation of some funding but it certainly did not cover the overall loss and damages. IF you want to know more TDR, talk to me. I, my father, grandfather & great grandfather worked on the Great Western.

I wonder… if conservatives plan to nationalize the trains, how high will they evaluate the compensation to their current owner… a nice sums that's worth more than real value? to help a "friend"

I complain a lot about my local rail operator (Greater Anglia) but I also remember the days of British Rail and how old and rubbish the trains and carriages were
