   We just need a bigger company to run more water supplies across the nation. Privatize further and consolidate. Water is too cheap and there are more profits to be made

   Should be looking at places where running water companies is a success. Municipal water control, small specialized companies that compete with each other for running municipal water operations may be the way to go.

   Listen lady, the State has to look after the less fortunate, therefore, in order to so do, the State must be able generate finances, and a State owned Water Company, a National Bank, Nation Insurance, National Airport and Seaport etc. Those Industries that are ran bad, is done so deliberately in order to privatise…………LADY, ANY investor wants to purchase your Ombudsman's Office ????? i don't think so, you ask yourself, why ????????? phucking brain dead people.

   Is this presenter sane? You debate along the philosophical lines when the reality is you won't drink safe water tomorrow. Water needs to be run by communities they belong to with money from taxes. I pay huge taxes and i can't even have clean water this is madness.

   When a company what ever company own a utility such as water it must be written into law that it has to maintain the quality to a high standard before prioritizing its profits margin.duty of care.
   Thank god that as yet they have not managed to sell the air we breath to a utility company.
   Whome i am sure would find a way to tank and meter what we breath.

    Why the hell this water company was sold off in the first place is beyond me but to sell it to Chinese company is unforgivable. All the electricity , gas and water should never have been privatised in the interest of national security.
    What the he'll happened to buying British ?
    This water company should just be put back in public ownership and not give any money to this Chinese company !

    I’d like Michelle to explain to us what is so bad about Scottish Water. I live in Scotland and I’ve never heard of these issues that she failed to explain. As far as I can see, we have a much better service than folk in England.

    Local governments . Absolutely .
    It shouldn't be a profitable entity . All profits should go on infrastructure and it should absolutely be run on a local system .
    Other countries have lower standards about how they clean our water.. were probably being slowly poisoned for all we know. We are idiots for letting it get to this and we are idiots the longer this theft and debacle goes on

    At a fairly young age, I was introduced to the world of "cost accounting". Most of you will be aware of this practice, but for those who have not come across it, the object is, when running a business for profit, to come to a figure which covers all your expenses in producing your product, then applying a profit (or "mark-up"). So, if your "widget" costs 15 pence per unit to produce, including energy, materials, equipment and labour costs, rent, etc., then one could sell a unit at say, 20 pence, or 25 pence – whatever the market will bear. There's your profit.
    With Thames Water, it is evident that none of this attention to cost and possible profit, have been ignored, in favour of a simple "make as much as we can". We see with every major infrastructure project, (i.e: main sewer replacement), the water Companies rely on increasing bills for the consumer, to pay for them. Do the clever accountants never factor in this kind of program? (I assume at this point that the building of dams, hydro-power plants, etc., would be under Government auspices – I do not expect water Companies to build dams!
    This is why I favour nationalisation of water (and not only water – I would also do that to energy – electricity and gas, and "renewables").
    To have an absolutely necessary means of life owned by a small group of grasping executives and shareholders is not correct in any way.

    This industry was sold off cheap in the late 80s, exactly what has been explained total theft with asset stripping and very little improvement in infrastructure as they are more interested in giving huge saleries and dividends to shareholders outside of the uk. They have the cheek to say that they are still having to deal with old antiquated victorian infrastructure that they have had since 1989 to sort out and now expect the customers to bail them out with huge rises in bills. This industry is a joke, run by incompetent idiots who live the high life at the customers expense. A total disgrace. Nationalise asap.

    So having rinsed out every last drop of profit for their share holders and bosses bonus's, (sorry for the pun) guess who will be picking up the pieces when this mob go tit's up? Share holders??? Of course not as we saw when Lloyds names went screaming into their muesli coughing and spluttering about having to stump up money instead of receiving it as they had done for years with out complaint, or like when the greedy fat bankers nearly took the entire british banking industry to its death while filling their pockets every year, IT will be us the tax payer getting shafted yet again in a bail out while their executives get golden hand shakes worth millions and slip off to a new job where it matters not if you fail as there is always the TAX PAYER to save them. All utilities should be publicly owned and not for profit.

    Very good time for the government to takeover. Pick it up cheap if it's going bust.
    But then again nationalised industries usually end up with lack of investment because there is usually never enough money to go around and always something more urgent to spend it on. (build a new reservoir that may or not be necessary in times of severe drought, OR, build several new hospitals ??, for example)

    Though I'm far from a socialist, I agree with Aron Bastani. All our Utilities should be publically owned. Why? Because they are the life blood of any society and any profits should be usex to update and improve, not provide large bonuses for foreign executives who then leave us with a £14billion debt pile. Yet another EU initiative that turned bad, thank god we left.
