Victoria Derbyshire on her Gisele Pelicot interview | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Today, Laura and Paddy speak to Victoria Derbyshire about her exclusive UK interview with Gisèle Pelicot, the woman at the centre of France’s largest rape trial.

She told Victoria she was “crushed by horror” on discovering that, for years, her husband had repeatedly drugged her unconscious and invited dozens of men to rape her.

Victoria spoke to her about how she waived her legal right to anonymity, opening up the trial to the public and the media in order for “the shame to shift to the other side”.

The full interview is on iPlayer now and on BBC2 at 10pm on Sunday. It’s called Gisèle Pelicot: The Newsnight Interview.

US President Trump says Iran shot down US helicopter and vows to respond | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond to the attack out of “necessity”.

Two crew members of the downed Apache helicopter were rescued by an American sea drone, US Central Command (Centcom) said.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”

It was not immediately clear what the US response would be, but any military action risks inflaming the shaky ceasefire with Iran once again. There has been no immediate response from Tehran on the US president’s comments.
