Naseem Hamed 34–0 (30 KO) vs. Augie Sanchez 26–1 (23 KO) was a professional boxing match contested on August 19, 2000, for the WBO and lineal featherweight championship. The bout took place at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut.
WBO featherweight champion Naseem Hamed and 22-year old prospect Augie Sanchez agreed to meet one another in June 2000 for an August title fight. After knocking out the reigning super bantamweight champion Vuyani Bungu in the fourth round earlier in the year, Hamed and his team began negotiations for Hamed’s next title fight to be against a highly-rated fighter, with Érik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera being in the forefront. Other names such as Johnny Tapia, Danny Romero and Freddie Norwood were also mentioned, but none were able to agree to a deal.
Then-WBA super bantamweight champion Clarence emerged as the front-runner before Hamed ultimately chose to face the relatively unknown Sanchez.
Sanchez had been a promising prospect, engaging in a rivalry in the amateurs with Floyd Mayweather Jr., having defeated him once in the 1996 pre-Olympic trials before losing twice to Mayweather which cost him a shot to make 1996 US Olympic boxing team.
Hamed, who in his previous fight had promised to tone down his extravagant ring entrances, entered the ring to Black Rob’s hit single “Whoa!” bursting through a wall while accompanied by explosions, lasers and Arabic chanting. Sanchez, meanwhile, entered the ring to Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” while being accompanied by four Elvis impersonators.

😱Hasim Rahman KNOCKED OUT Lennox Lewis in South Africa 25 years ago today‼️
Billed ‘Thunder in Africa’ the bout took place in the Carnival City Casino in Brakpan, South Africa for the WBC/IBF/IBO Heavyweight titles.
Lewis, a 20-1 favourite, trained for the bout in Vegas while filming scenes for ‘Oceans Eleven’ for a boxing match with Wladimir Klitschko whilst his opponent had already set off for Brakpan.
With the African city sitting 5,200 feet above sea level (Vegas is 2,000) the champion didn’t arrive in the country until 12 days before fight night, while a full-trained and fully-motivated Rahman pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the history of heavyweight boxing as he flattened the Brit to become unified champion of the world.

😱Rahman SHOCKS the WORLD🌎 | Lennox Lewis vs Hasim Rahman | WBC/IBF Heavyweight Boxing | On This Day
Lennox Lewis vs. Hasim Rahman, billed as Thunder in Africa, was a heavyweight professional boxing match contested between unified WBC, IBF, IBO, and lineal champion Lennox Lewis, and Hasim Rahman. The bout took place on 22 April 2001 in Brakpan, South Africa. Rahman, who was a 20–1 underdog, won by knockout in the fifth round. It was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
Following three successful title defenses in 2000, Lennox Lewis turned his sights on a potential superfight with Mike Tyson. Lewis had originally hoped to meet Tyson during the summer of 2001, however, Tyson was issued a three-month suspension early in the year after testing positive for marijuana following his 2000 fight with Andrew Golota. Lewis opted to make his next defense against little-known Hasim Rahman. Lewis came into the fight as a 20–1 favorite and paid little attention to his opponent, having begun negotiations for his long-awaited match with Tyson while also being challenged to a possible unification match by WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz. Brakpan, Gauteng, South Africa, is 5,200 feet above sea level. Rahman arrived on 27 March so he would have time to adjust to the high altitude, but Lewis didn’t arrive until 10 April. Lewis trained in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is 2,000 feet above sea level. He trained in Las Vegas so he could also film scenes for a cameo appearance in the movie Ocean’s Eleven. Notwithstanding the altitude challenges, the actual fight itself took place at an odd time, 05:00 (SAST) on Sunday 22 April 200 in order to accommodate HBO’s significant United States-based audience at a reasonable hour on Saturday 21 April 2001. After Lewis was knocked out by Rahman, HBO commentator Larry Merchant said, “He just drowned in Ocean’s Eleven.”
