Depersonalisation disorder: Why are some people unable to feel love? BBC News

Published

on

For people living with depersonalisation disorder the world appears unreal, as if through a haze or fog – or even in 2D. Many are left emotionally numb, unable to feel love. One in 100 people is thought to have the condition, but experts are warning that few medical professionals have heard of it.

I wish bbc didn't put themes and music background. It's not a nice topic. And it's not a joke. Like the hikikormi, it's not a joke. Please be more observing of what you edit on this topic please.

ADHD, aphantasia and SDAM … I'm guessing that lack of empathy and lack of love are somehow related.

I'm not diagnosed and I will not diagnose myself, but this perfectly describes what I've been going through for almost a year now. I have a hard time understanding and actually feeling love, it feels like a foreign concept. It never feels artificial or real, every time I try to grasp it. It's just simply not there.

I've had this my whole life, I don't even know what it's like to be normal, I'm 32 and it's only just been diagnosed.

For me, its been chronic for almost a year. My family feel like strangers. My body doesnt feel like mine. Time goes by inexplicably fast. I sleep all the time. The world feels so unreal. Like Im an observer in someone elses body. Or like Im looking through a glass wall metaphorically. And sometimes I just stare into nothingness for a while because its so confusing. I went to the doctor but only came home with some Prozac for depression. I guess I do appear depressed but I feel so out of it all the time that I can't tell if Im depressed. Slowly my emotions have felt more and more disconnected. Second week of Prozac and Im I think my symptoms have only worsened. But Im still taking it and I honestly dont know why. Maybe Im hoping for a miracle that the medicine works, even though Im 99 percent sure it won't help. I live with my immediate family since I'm still underage (16), but I haven't spoken to them for months. I don't feel like talking to anyone anymore. Hell, I don't even want to go to school. I have no one to talk to. No motivation to do work or even things I enjoy cause it all feels fake, foggy, like a never ending dream. I dont know what to do.

I’ve had this off and on since childhood, after my anxiety started showing its head. It feels like a really good (albeit disturbing in a way) 3rd person video game, where you’re just over your shoulder, but still using your own mind and eyes. Touch doesn’t feel the same either, like the flat emotions as well, for me.
I typically have issues when I’m overwhelmed and anxious, and heading towards burnout. It really cripples me, and affects nearly all aspects of my life.

I get this. I had a substantial period of bad trauma and individual traumatic experiences all in the same bloc together, some of which I had amnesia of. From what I can tell is that my brain goes into a state of defence-mechanism where, instead of the normal brain function which would consist of passing short-term memory to long term retained memory, my brain just goes from taking the short-term and then just bundling it away asap, and I think that is what causes the dream-like state. Memory function feels disconnected or diverted. My two cents.

I definitely feel like a robot when it happens, the strange thing is you function somehow but it is exhausting. My arms often feel like one of those blow up dolls that are outside shops that flap about in the wind, it's very surreal. I've had out of body experiences many times.

The channel "depersonalisation manual" is good. I find that the "3D emotional" feeling is actually a very diffuse way of listening to all your senses at once and these complex mixtures of the senses create the emotions we feel in our gut (that are missed when feeling derealisation). When I had really bad derealisation, it felt like all of my senses where distinct and separate from each other. I find that open eye mindfulness meditation encourages an open, receptive and deep acceptance that all the senses really don't have to be separated and actually shouldn't be in order to create emotions.
Sunny day, smell of cut grass listening to a radio from the next room thinking of what a friend would
Might do if they came in to the room, with a stomach full of good food. Acceptance and commitment thereby worked for me, as an experiment I accepted that it was actually all a dream and this had the effect of lumping everything together with a result that by sub-conscious looked for reasons why it wasn't a dream. It's absurd but I think it is a flight response that makes derealisation turn everything into data. Check out the channel called derealisation manual, it's a good starting place.

This happened to me after a course of antibiotics called ciprofloxacin, I have had it for 7 years. Disconnected brain, soul dosnt feel connected to my physical body. Walking feels awkward like im not connected to my body moving, feels like im in a different dimension to my surroundings

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington.
