Trump says ‘no going back’ on Greenland plan | The Global Story Podcast
President Donald Trump says he’s going to tell world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week that the United States “has to have” Greenland.
But why has Greenland become so important in his thinking?
Trump says he will, “100%” follow through on his threats to impose tariffs if a deal over Greenland is not reached, and responded, “no comment” on Monday when asked whether he would use force to seize the island.
Even if Trump’s attempt to control Greenland goes no further, has trust between the United States and its Nato allies been damaged beyond repair?
Tristan Redman speaks to the BBC’s World News correspondent, Joe Inwood.

Joshua Wong, once the face of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for colluding with foreign forces under the city’s sweeping national security law.
Wong is among hundreds of campaigners and ordinary Hongkongers arrested under the law, which was imposed in 2020 following explosive pro-democracy protests against Beijing’s growing control.
Critics say the far-reaching law has silenced dissent, but authorities argue that it is needed to maintain stability and deny it has weakened the city’s cherished autonomy.
Having already spent the last six years in jail, Wong, who was due to be freed in January, will now spend another decade behind bars.
