Polls open in Israel ahead of pivotal election | BBC News

Published

on

Israelis are heading to the polls for what many view as one of the most pivotal elections in the country’s history.

Polling published on Friday suggests incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu is in a near neck-and-neck race with former military chief Gadi Eisenkot to become prime minister.

But neither of their political blocs are projected to win the 61 seats needed to form a majority government – meaning weeks or months of political wrangling may lie ahead.

What’s at stake for Trump in the US midterm elections? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

Millions of Americans are casting their votes for House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates in the 2026 midterm elections. And while President Donald Trump is not on the ballot, this is a pivotal moment for his presidency, which could shape his final two years in the White House, and his political legacy.

Democrats are hoping to capitalise on concerns about high costs of living, exacerbated by President Trump’s tariffs and the war with Iran. Opinion polling suggests the Democrats could take control of both houses of Congress, but many key races are within the margin of error. Close Senate races are forecast in several previously reliable Republican states, including Texas, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas and Ohio.

In this video, we visit some of these battleground states, and find out how issues like rising fuel costs, immigration and affordable healthcare are affecting voters.

00:00 Introduction
01:16 What the midterms mean for Donald Trump
03:49 How rising fuel costs are affecting US farmers
06:46 Could Trump’s immigration crackdown and ICE raids alienate some Republican voters?
07:51 Why Obamacare is taking centre stage in Georgia’s senate race

King Charles to address slavery during Commonwealth speech in Antigua | BBC News

Published

on

King Charles III is to speak with “unflinching honesty” and “sincere sorrow” on the lasting pain of the transatlantic slave trade, during the final leg of his Caribbean tour in Antigua, Buckingham Palace has said.

The King will address Commonwealth leaders on Tuesday in a speech which will touch on the issue.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said earlier he was “open” to the possibility of the UK formally apologising for its role in slavery – a change in the government’s stance.

The British government has never formally apologised for slavery or offered to pay reparations.
