French PM François Bayrou calls confidence vote amid budget row | BBC News
French Prime Minister François Bayrou has said parliament has 13 days to choose between chaos or responsibility, after calling a vote of confidence on plans for deep budget cuts.
Bayrou, who has led a minority government since last December, said in an interview he would “fight like a dog” to win the 8 September vote.
Opposition parties have lined up to say they will vote against him, from the National Rally on the right to the Socialists, Greens and France Unbowed on the left.
The vote comes two days before protests are due to take place in France to “block everything”.
Reacting to news of the vote, France’s CAC-40 share index fell 1.59% on Monday and then a further 1.5% on Tuesday.

Joshua Wong, once the face of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for colluding with foreign forces under the city’s sweeping national security law.
Wong is among hundreds of campaigners and ordinary Hongkongers arrested under the law, which was imposed in 2020 following explosive pro-democracy protests against Beijing’s growing control.
Critics say the far-reaching law has silenced dissent, but authorities argue that it is needed to maintain stability and deny it has weakened the city’s cherished autonomy.
Having already spent the last six years in jail, Wong, who was due to be freed in January, will now spend another decade behind bars.
