At least 70 people are known to have died in the flash floods that have swept through parts of central Texas.

Hundreds of rescuers have been deployed to search for people who are missing. The worst affected area is Kerr County where a Christian youth camp located along the River Guadalupe was swept away by theflooding.

“The work continues, and will continue, until everyone is found,” promised Larry Leitha, the sheriff of Kerr County.
People have also been confirmed dead in other parts of the state, including Travis County and Tom Green County.

Multiple flash flood warnings remain in place. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an expanded disaster declaration to step up search efforts. He said officials would be relentless in ensuring they locate “every single person who’s been a victim of this event”, adding that “we will stop when the job is completed”.

In a post on social media, President Trump said: “These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy.”

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Gary O’Donoghue in Kerr County.

Karl Bushby completes 28-year journey from Chile to Hull | BBC News

Published

on

British adventurer Karl Bushby has completed his 31,000-mile (50,000 km) journey from South America to Hull in the UK, reuniting with his mother at the family home 28 years after setting off.

In November 1998, the former paratrooper, then aged 29, set off from Punta Arenas, Chile, to complete an unbroken path back home, without breaking two self-imposed rules: not to return to the UK until the end of the journey, and not to use transport to advance.

Bushby said only about 15 of the 28 years were spent walking, with struggles obtaining visas, the 2007 global economic crash and Covid blamed for delays.

He often retreated to Mexico, where costs are low, between stints.

Under the rules he set for his journey, Bushby could not return to the UK to meet his family.

Polls open in Israel ahead of pivotal election | BBC News

Published

on

Israelis are heading to the polls for what many view as one of the most pivotal elections in the country’s history.

Polling published on Friday suggests incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu is in a near neck-and-neck race with former military chief Gadi Eisenkot to become prime minister.

But neither of their political blocs are projected to win the 61 seats needed to form a majority government – meaning weeks or months of political wrangling may lie ahead.
