the only thing Unionists would agree to is a hard border between NI and ROI. That's what they actually want (without saying it clearly of course). And that would be a disaster for peace in the region

Northern Ireland is a thorn in the side that the UK Government created for themselves and I am sure now would gladly get rid of.

Whats wrong with a united Ireland; the UK which already excludes The Channel Islands and the isle of Man,will still be Great Britain."Beyond the Pale" no longer means unacceptable anyway. Its Europe Day today; ReUnite.

Watching this after the most recent elections. This entire thing was wholly predictable thanks to Brexshit. There is no solution (at least not 1 that keeps everyone happy), and there never was. I said that in 2016, and yet here we STILL are. Funny that. It's just a shame certain ends of the political spectrum can't admit that Brexshit was always going to be impossible with NI, but thanks to the British Govt (who clearly didn't think that over either) we are where we are. What a mess.

The voice of the Majority of Northern Irish people should be heard! They like the Protocol. The DUP like their founder just Shout and Shout and they are devoid of any ideas other than to say No to everything. John Hume and Co. told them decades ago to see what was coming (A United Ireland) and start negotiating from a position of strength, of course they didn't and now it's too late… It's on the doorstep.
The mass resettlement of the Unionists back to Britian is probably the best option for them.
Of course the Britian they think exists disappeared a long time ago. Oops!
There is no good outcome for the DUPs of this world. The Irish don't want them, the majority in Northern Ireland don't either, so could you take them in please Britian 🙄

The irony of the DUP trying to bring a lawsuit against the U.K. government on the basis that the protocol violates the GFA is not lost on me.

It’s a tough one over here, and that’s probably the nicest way of putting it. I was raised Protestant however I’ve now removed that and I don’t feel like I fall in either the Protestant or Catholic camp. The big issue is that the parties in Stormont are so territorial now that no matter what happens they’ll never change their ways.

As a gay man I was relieved to hear that gay marriage had been passed however on the flip side the parties in Stormont are trying to diminish and even overturn that ruling which makes me feel like a second or third class citizen. The parties always say that they want to make everything better for everyone but they just use that as a catalyst for political “clout” so to speak.

What do I think is going to happen or what should happen next? I honestly don’t know, and I don’t think any political figure over here has an idea either

    December 22, 2023 at 9:34 am

The Brexit as it is brought regulatory checks not the Protocol. The pritocol just settled where these checks take place.
The Protocol reduces checks to a bare minimum and is based on a lot of trust the EU grants the UK not to misuse this trust.
The protocol also enables businesess in NI to trade quite freely with the UK and the EU, the only place in all of Europe.

The UK government, the EU incl IRE and the US wanted no checks on the island.
Unionists were the only ones who wanted checks on the island, with all consequences.

  22. @fdmm1522

    December 22, 2023 at 9:34 am

the only solution for unionists is a hard border on the island of ireland, and only the DUP and the TUV would accept that, the uk maybe would if america wasnt invested in NI. ultimately there must be a border somewhere, and it wont be on in ireland
