Johannesburg in South Africa has one of the world’s largest gold deposits. After decades of mining, large swathes of the population are thought to be exposed to toxic and radioactive mine waste.
The BBC’s Sophie Ribstein went to meet people living close to the dumps to find out what effect it is having on their health.

As Canada continues to wage a trade war with the US, an internal battle is being fought over the countryâs identity. Next month, voters in Alberta, the countryâs wealthiest province, face a referendum on whether they want the opportunity to explore a separation from Canada.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to unveil plans that will see some asylum seekers flown to Rwanda in order to have their asylum applications processed.
The trial scheme would mean single men arriving in Britain via Channel crossings could be forcibly removed.
Refugee organisations have criticised the plans as cruel and urged a rethink.
The deal is expected to see the Rwanda, which is part of the Commonwealth, given an initial ÂŁ120m as part of a trial, but opponents say the annual cost of the full scheme would be far higher.

Over the last week, the Houthis – an Iran-backed militant group in Yemen – have captured two strategic islands along the Red Sea coast, consolidating its control of a key international shipping route known as the Bab al-Mandab strait.
Saudi Arabia has relied on access to the strait for exporting its oil to customers in Asia. With the Strait of Hormuz already closed due to the Iran war, the Houthisâ control of this vital waterway threatens to deepen the global oil supply crisis.
Tristan Redman is joined by the BBCâs Security Correspondent Frank Gardner to unpack who the Houthis are, what they want, and how they have come to hold so much influence on the worldâs economy.

UK new coronavirus variant âout of controlâ as countries announce travel bans – BBC News
The UK government has said a new mutation of the coronavirus is âout of controlâ in parts of England and spreading rapidly. The latest figures show more than 35,000 new infections, many in London and the south-east.
Several countries have announced that they are banning travel from the UK â with France suspending passenger and some freight transport. The Port of Dover has temporarily been closed.
New restrictions have come into force for 18 million people in England and 3 million people in Wales.
In England areas within the new Tier 4 rules include London, Kent and most of Essex. People have been told to stay home with non-essential shops closed. Christmas mixing of households will not be permitted.
The festive rules have changed in the rest of England too – with a gathering only now allowed on Christmas Day.

Before Gold was discovered in Johannesburg it was a farm. nobody forced nobody to go there, people went there for work, Black and white lol now it is a rubbish place, i stay very far away from Gauteng, dont like it.

One must mention that these people who are living here are mine slaves coming all the way from their good homes, got the least job at the mine in some forest and decides to create a small shack next to the work place, end up bringing some women over and make babies in the process. this is not a normal community in South Africa. US media likes showing these kind of places intending to show bad image about Africa.

These mine dumps were created in the 40's and 50's. More than half of Johannesburgs roads are built on Tailings. Johannesburg was built around the dumps, not the other way round.
When these dumps were built, places like Modderfontein were farms, I have seen the hand drawn mining plans signed off in the 40's.
I work on these dumps and we are mining them daily and I can tell you that people are quick to blame the mines because they want money and don't take responsibility for their actions and decisions in life.

I see it is well over 1 year since this was posted, and I heard today that Fredrik Gertten and others have just made a movie about this. It can now be seen here in Sweden, and I really look forward to seeing this movie. I never want to buy gold anymore because this is so terrible and scary.

Hundreds, thousands of waste dumps are all over the city. Commercial property and houses are virtually and sometimes build on the dumps so yes try relocate the whole city. The dumps are really in between all areas and the city has surrounded all the dumbs everywhere. They've started to reprocess the dumbs, not sure where the waste is going as its mountains, maybe moving it underground.
