Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has had surgery to remove a lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican has said in a medical bulletin.
The 71-year-old underwent a 90 minute operation on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and was subsequently diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
The lump was first detected during what the Vatican has described as “routine checks”.
Earlier, large crowds gathered outside the hospital to greet the Pope, with some waiting for several hours. They cheered greetings and well wishes as he passed, while he waved and smiled back through the lowered back window of his car.
He was then met by staff on the hospital steps. “I’m sorry,” one of them commiserated, to which the Pope gave a smile and a shrug. “We’re here for you,” he was assured.
In its statement, the Vatican said the whole lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung was removed “to ensure the procedure was radical”.
A Vatican source told Agence France-Presse news agency that further tests are being carried out to see if there was any sign the cancer had spread.
Leo XIV announced news of his operation to the world on Sunday, without at that time confirming that he was suffering from cancer. Speaking from the balcony in St Peter’s Square after delivering the traditional Angelus blessing, he said the nodule, or growth, on his lung was “contained” and had been found “at a very early stage”, but that doctors had advised him to have it removed.
Nodules are quite common and not necessarily cancerous, but after it was examined the medical team confirmed it was pulmonary adenocarcinoma, “as suspected by pre-operative tests”, the Vatican said. It said that the pontiff, who is generally thought to be fit, had no symptoms of infection or illness.

Today, an OpenAI employee has been charged with allegedly installing a recording device inside a boardroom.

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has shot a man in his car in the Bronx in New York City while the man’s five-year-old son sat in the backseat.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which runs ICE, confirmed an officer discharged his weapon while attempting to arrest a “criminal illegal alien” on Thursday.
The man, later identified as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, was alive and at a local hospital, officials said.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the ICE officer fired “multiple rounds” into the car with a child inside, calling it an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation”. The BBC has contacted DHS for comment about Mamdani’s remarks.
The DHS said Belgal was from the Dominican Republic and had “a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs and weapons possession”.
It also claimed Belgal was associated with a transnational criminal group.

The British media, especially the BBC has been Anti-Israel historically. The interviewer does not bring-up the fact that Palestinians build homes illegally. The Palestinians are always excused for suicide bombings, butchering babies, children and adults.

We Jews are also refugees fo 2000 years – persecuted and tortured physically and socially in the most crual imaginable ways – in Europe and some of Arab countries.
We got a small piece of our ancestral land and we are required to divide it with arab refugees kept in the status of refugees carefully for the images recording the Holocaust – until we disappear as a Jewish entity in an arab ocean.

People always forget the Biblical historical connection to the Jews and the land of Israel and Jerusalem, just as the Muslims have with Mecca. The Arabs are from Arabia, not Judea, which they rename as the "West Bank" in order to cover up its clear Jewish links. 🙃

"Israeli settlement must stay" : here we are, nine years later, with the results of policies based on such unacceptable stances. The international community must do what it can to pressure Israel in leaving the West Bank, settlers included. Colonisation cannot be the solution.
