Why has US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman? | BBC Newscast
Donald Trump has said he will bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of US talks with Iran.
Oman, which says it is a neutral country between Iran and the US, has suffered a number of strikes from Iran since the conflict broke out. However, it is now playing a role in negotiations to reopen the strait. On Monday, Iranian officials said they were close to finalising a deal with Oman on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jeremy Bowen, BBC international editor joins Adam to discuss Trump’s comments and ongoing negotiations between the US, Israel and Hamas on the implementation of the Gaza peace plan.
Plus, Joe Pike and Ben Chu join Adam to break down Reform UK’s pitch to ban foreign nationals from accessing most benefits as part of their proposed welfare reforms. They claim the plans would save £21bn a year by its fifth year, but the government says the policy would plunge the UK “back into years of Brexit re-negotiations”.

OpenAI scraps rollout of new ChatGPT model over safety concerns | BBC News
OpenAI has announced it will not release its latest AI model due to safety concerns.
Its GPT-6.1 Astra system, which performs tasks like browsing the web and using apps by itself, “didn’t quite meet the bar” of the company’s standards, according to Saachi Jain, head of safety systems at OpenAI.
It comes as breaches by major AI firms’ models intensify the debate about risks posed by the tech – with Anthropic underlining its concerns AI might threaten humanity as it prepares to go public.

Andrew takes legal action over search warrants relating to arrest | BBC News
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is taking legal action against Thames Valley Police over his arrest in February.
The former Prince Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, in the wake of information that emerged from the Epstein files in the United States.
Mountbatten-Windsor’s lawyers are challenging the search warrants used in Sandringham and at Royal Lodge in Windsor relating to his arrest, as first reported by the Telegraph.
Thames Valley Police confirmed: “We are engaged in legal proceedings in relation to warrants previously obtained from the Central Criminal Court.
“As these legal proceedings are currently ongoing, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”

Stun grenades banned in French student protests after teenager’s hand blown off | BBC News
The French government has suspended the use of stun grenades by police in school protests, as it appeals to students to go back to the classroom.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has temporarily halted the use of the grenades after a 15-year-old’s hand was blown off by a grenade fired by riot police near a school in Northern France. An investigation into the event has been launched.
Wider allegations have been made of excessive use of force by police in dealing with the protests which began at the start of October.
More schools reopened on Wednesday, although some remained blockaded, after an estimated 250,000 people took to the streets demonstrating over school conditions on Tuesday.
