A massive stretch of the Pacific is running 5.2 degrees hotter than normal. The record is 5.4, and that record happened in November. We are almost there in September.

One older El Niño, in 1877, may have been even stronger. It had to be reconstructed from ship logs, and the best evidence says it was a monster tied to a global climate disaster.

The weather is already acting weird. The Atlantic made it into the middle of September without a hurricane, the latest since 1941.

I’m tracking this thing all the way through winter.
